Earthworks DK50/R Drum Microphone Kit

The Earthworks DK50/R Drum Microphone Kit is a 3 piece microphone kit designed for recording studios. It features two QTC50's for overheads and one SR30 with kickpad for the kick drum. This is Earthworks' premier kit for capturing the sound of the drum kit as a whole unit.

The Earthworks DK50/R Drum Microphone Kit is a premium three-microphone system provide a more cohesive and unified drum sound. You’ll hear more attack, more subtle detail and a more pristine quality in the sound than with any other microphones. The Earthworks drum microphones capture every nuance of sound from each piece of the drum set with such an exceptional clarity and cohesiveness, which make it sound like a live set of drums, not a bunch of pieces.

Performance

Its polar pattern is consistent across all frequencies, simplifying mic placement, virtually eliminating phasing issues and ensuring more gain before feedback. The microphones in the Earthworks DK50/R have a transient response that is lightning fast, handling sharp attacks with ease, while still picking up all of the subtle nuances and softest dynamics of your playing.

With an extended 3Hz – 50kHz frequency response, the Earthworks QTC50s reproduce a more accurate representation of the original sound. The microphones’ transient response is ultra fast, handling sharp attacks with ease, while still picking up all of the subtle nuances and softest dynamics of your playing.

A good kick drum microphone needs to be designed and optimized for that specific purpose. This means the microphone is great for kick drum and nothing else. Therefore we designed the kick drum optimization in an external XLR package – the KickPad™. Just plug the KickPad™ into the mic line going to the SR30 microphone for incredible results. With the KickPad™ removed, you can use the same SR30 for most anything.

All three high quality Earthworks microphones in the Earthworks DK50/R DrumKit™ will provide stunning results on a wide variety of instruments and vocals. As an added bonus, the KickPad™ will improve the sound of other popular microphones used for kick drum.

What We Think

"Earthworks really has something special when it comes to capturing the drum kit as a whole, and the Earthworks DK50/R DrumKit System (Recording Version) is their premier kit for the minimalist. My experience with the kit resulted in a sound that captures and features the room as an element to be balanced via placement and distance against the kit. Distance = Depth. But there is something particularly special about using this style of capsule when recording... well, anything actually. Due to the extremely small diaphragm, you get about as accurate of a representation of the actual sonic waveforms within the space as possible since the diaphragm moves more as a whole instead of sections moving more than others and the need for paying such close attention to head tension adjustment - akin to tuning a drum - as you do with large diaphragm condensers. So, the Earthworks mics produce transients that are accurate and undistorted. This results in an increased perceived depth in the recording. However, this design isn't without some drawback. Since the micro diaphragm design doesn't produce tons of signal on it's own, the on-board amplifier has to produce more level to push down the line to present to the microphone preamp. The result is an increase in noise. This isn't a deal-breaker, however. I think you'll find it actually pleasing and comforting when you're recording to digital since it acts as a little bit of subliminal 'glue' to the audio during very quiet passages. Still, it is worth considering a preamplifier with low-noise specifications. However, I tend to prefer transformer balanced inputs and outputs in a preamp since they can help to take the edge off the sound from being 'hard' and help reduce any possible line-induced noise or hum. But when it's all said and done, the Earthworks DK50/R DrumKit System (Recording Version) is a fantastic way to go when you have made the investment in getting your skills and drum kit performing as well as possible at the source. The DK50/R DrumKit System is perhaps one of the best ways to capture your performances as a whole and cohesive picture. But don't just take my word for it. If you have a discriminating ear for detail, then you should hear it for yourself, right off the bat."
