De-Essers at Front End Audio

De-Essers are specialized dynamics processors designed to control harsh or excessive sibilance without dulling the entire signal. They are most commonly used on vocals, where sounds such as “S,” “T” and “SH” can become overly aggressive, but De-Essing can also help control bright cymbals, guitars and other sources with concentrated high-frequency energy.

How a De-Esser Works

A De-Esser detects energy within a selected high-frequency range and applies gain reduction when that range becomes excessive. Unlike broad EQ, which changes that part of the spectrum continuously, De-Essing acts dynamically so the high frequencies are reduced primarily when the problem occurs. Depending on the processor, controls may include frequency selection, threshold, amount of reduction, bandwidth and monitoring of the detector signal. This makes a De-Esser especially useful when the source sounds balanced most of the time but becomes harsh on specific syllables or transients.

Vocals are the primary application for De-Essing because microphone choice, singer technique, compression and EQ can all make sibilance more noticeable. A De-Esser allows engineers to control the offending high-frequency peaks dynamically without removing all of that clarity from the source.
