The Kludge Audio 510 Transwarmer is a mellow and soft sounding audio transformer for you 500-Series rack which adds a distinctive but subtle transformer sound to your recordings.

The Kludge Audio 510 Transwarmer has no need to worry about matching impedances or loads. The transformer used is specially designed to match the sound of a classic model that we all like the sound of, but built with modern materials to make it much more convenient, reliable, and affordable than the original. Just like the Kludge Audio 506 Equalizer, it takes the best parts of traditional technology and the best parts of modern design to integrate classic sounds into modern studios.

Kludge Audio 510 Transwarmer Features

    Kludge Transwarmer for slight coloration
    Michael Bailey

The Kludge transwarmer gives a slight softening, and warmth, to an audio signal. I have utilized this as the last step in a signal chain, and also while mixing as a send unit to warm up a deep vocal track that was recorded through a more transparent pre-amp. It does the trick, subtle, but effective and takes off some of the digital edge that modern recordings can have. I also have used it on a somewhat sterile sounding acoustic guitar track and it gave it just the edge it needed. It has the impedance switch which you should try since it can make just the needed difference in the sound of the track you are working on. Eventually I will have at least one of each of all of the Kludge products. This line is made in a small shop in Virginia and there is a really solid feel to these modules. They are very streamlined, designed without a lot of frills, but built to last, built to do the job at hand.

What We Think

The Kludge Audio 510 Transwarmer is one of those modules that sounds bigger than it has any right to. When we started running audio through it, it immediately reminded us of what we love about large-format consoles — that unmistakable transformer saturation that adds musicality, depth, and a sense of glue that’s hard to come by in today’s more sterile digital workflows. While using the 510 Transwarmer in sessions, it felt like an easy way to bring some of that classic tone back into the signal chain without the size, cost, or maintenance of a full console. In practice, the 510 Transwarmer does exactly what the name implies. Running tracks, buses, and even full mixes through it, we heard a fuller, more forward sound with enhanced depth and punch that just felt right. The simplicity is part of the appeal — there’s essentially one switch, used to set the output impedance depending on what you’re feeding, and interestingly enough, we found ourselves flipping it back and forth just to hear the subtle tonal shifts and pick the vibe that best fit the music. Throw a pair of these into a 500-series rack and start experimenting on buses or the mix bus, and it becomes clear why this is such a powerful tool. It’s one of those pieces the we keep coming back to, because once you hear what it does, it’s hard not to want one — or two — in every studio.
