Heil PR-20 Handheld Dynamic Microphone
The Heil PR-20 Handheld Dynamic Microphone does a fantastic job capturing sound from vocals, guitar, drums, cymbals, piano and much more. The Heil PR-20 faithfully upholds the sound and is built to last!
Its wide frequency range outperforms the tired, 30+ year old industry technology and can withstand huge amounts of SPL. The end result is a microphone that can answer the call to any application. For example, the gorgeous upper mid range makes the Heil PR-20 the absolute best live vocal microphone, while its outstanding frequency response and superb dynamic range suit it perfectly for use with a snare drum.
Since 1982, Heil Sound has been the leading manufacturer of communications microphones and has a paramount understanding of phasing. When properly applied, this knowledge creates outstanding cardioid patterns with unbelievable rear rejection that removes unwanted sounds that try to enter from the off axis rear. The pattern control of the Heil PR-20 is outstanding. This exceptional performance is achieved by using the ideal combination of materials for the large low mass diaphragm and a special mixture of neodymium, iron, and boron that gives the Heil PR-20 the strongest magnet structure available.
In addition to the special magnet structure, the Heil PR-20 achieves its exceptional performance by using a large 1 1/8" low mass voice coil assembly. Special attention has been paid to the phasing plug assembly with equally placed ports that sense audio from behind, entering them out of phase. Thus, the Heil PR-20 produces a very linear cardioid pattern and reduces the proximity effect while achieving perfect articulation. This new Heil element is usable in extreme high sound pressure levels and is immune to overload conditions making it perfect for vocal and live sound applications.

What We Think
The Heil PR-20 Handheld Dynamic Microphone is a full and lush sounding vocal microphone. It is also a great choice for snare drum if you're looking for more woody body. And it can work even for electric guitars, though it would not be my very first choice - the PR-30 or PR-31 BW would be excellent fits instead in this application. The problems with handling noise of the PR-20 microphone, when held in the hand, inspired the Heil PR-22, which is the same microphone element, only with much better shock isolation internally. So, if you're looking for better isolation from vibrations, the PR-22 is a better bet. However, if placed on a stand, the mic still works very well and is a top choice.

definitely the best microphone for guitar in this price range I've ever heard or used!
We use the PR-20 as a second mic on guitar cabs. Mic is well crafted and sounds great. Definitely worth looking into if you need a great dynamic.
I like this mic, it is a professional, solid dynamic microphone. I like it on toms especially. I don't get excited about it being the most amazing mic ever like some other reviews state - it is very good but in the same league as the other industry standard dynamic microphones. Worth a try and at the price very good value.
I did my on-line research and figured, I can send it back... so why not try it? When my PR-20 arrived I did a-b tests with all my other favorite mics, and was blown away. Priced like the standard dynamic, it sounds like the studio condensers you wish you could afford. It is a huge sound, resonant, sexy... and you can work it like a dynamic: back off for blending harmonies; kiss it to sound like God. This is, finally, a different technology, and it is astounding! No, it is not the best acoustic guitar mic, and you will have to experiement with other applications (Heil makes other mics too), but for vocals, I swear, try this one!
