The Stager SR-5 Directional Ribbon Microphone combines the smooth, natural character of a classic ribbon mic with a focused hypercardioid pickup pattern that helps keep unwanted room sound out of the recording.

Designed for guitar cabinets and vocals but versatile enough for practically any source, the SR-5 delivers rich tone, controlled ambience, and plenty of personality wherever you place it. At the heart of the SR-5 is Stager’s proprietary toroidal transformer - the same transformer design used in the company’s SR-1A and SR-2N microphones. Its passive ribbon design, neodymium magnets, and corrugated aluminum ribbon work together to capture sources with the warmth, depth, and natural transient response engineers expect from a high-quality ribbon microphone. The directional hypercardioid pattern makes the SR-5 especially useful in live rooms, project studios, and other recording environments where isolation matters. Place it close to a guitar amplifier for a full, larger-than-life tone, use it on vocals for smooth and focused capture, or put it to work on drums, keyboards, and other instruments that could use a little ribbon-mic magic. Each SR-5 is machined in the USA and handmade in Nashville.

    My favorite mic in a live room

    When I’m recording a band in a live environment, these are my go-to vocal, guitar, and Wurlitzer cabinet microphones. They flatter what’s right in front of them in a very natural sounding way, and I hear very little of the rest of the room. Impressive. So much so I now own three.
