The Shure SM57 Dynamic Microphone is a cardioid dynamic instrument microphone designed to offer clean reproduction of amplified and acoustic instruments. It features a contoured frequency response for rich vocal pickup, background noise reduction, and a pneumatic shock mount system. A snare crack. An arpeggiated chord. A powerful saxophone solo. Whether on stage or in the studio, the notes that flow from your instrument connects your audience on a visceral level. And such sounds need a mic that can handle its strength. Awesome!
    Graham Vasquez

My band uses this on our snare, sometimes on the bass drum, on guitar amps, and even bass amps. This is just a great, versatile microphone. Definitely a go to.

    Decent General Purpose Dynamic Mic
    Mathew Carroll

These mics get lots of praise for their versatility. They never really sound bad, but the highs roll off and thus leave a bit to be desired in terms of upper frequency response. Presence peak can be very nasal and unappealing on certain sources (especially certain vocalists), but very appropriate for others (electric guitar, for example). Certainly the sm57 is a studio staple and a good mic for the price.

    desert island mic...
    Thomas Szy

An absolute essential for ANY studio, home or pro. Multiple live uses as well. I get fantastic results miking the my snare with a 57. It just does the job so well, and something else that should be mentioned about this mic is how durable it is. You don't have do worry about dinging it, especially if it's used to mic up drums. Also does a good job at loud aggressive vocals. Heck, every studio should have at least 3 of these.

You gotta have at least one.
    Anonymous

This is the one microphone that you should at least have one of. They are so inexpensive and multidimensional. I use it mostly on guitar amp and percussion, but I throw one up just about anywhere. There are even entire albums that have been made with them.

    SM57
    Kenyon Kowal

What a great all around mic! This mic performs great with a lot of different application. Being a music student it is a great price for exactly what I need. Guitar amps sound great through these as well as simple mono acoustic guitar. Great for snares and all around the drum kit. What a great all around mic for the price!

    Great workhorse
    Egor Kalgannikov

Can withstand lots of abuse. Surprisingly more often used as vocal mic by pros than sm58. With a good pre it just shines. Percussion, drums, amps, vocals - you name it. You can use it on everything with good results. The piece you buy and it stays with you for the rest of your life.
