    Great mic
    Phill Richardson

The Beta 57 is about as versatile of a mic as one can find. With a little effort you can capture almost endless numbers of sources. Stick it on a guitar amp speaker, stick it near the neck/ body joint on a acoustic, stick it on a snare or high hat. Heck, even try dropping one or two into a console piano. Plus, it can hold it's own as a dynic vocal mic

What We Think

avatar

The Shure Beta 57A has been a true workhorse for us for decades, and it’s earned every bit of that reputation. While using it across countless sessions since the late ’90s, it’s found its way onto guitar cabs, vocals, and drums in just about every style of music imaginable. Compared to the standard SM57, the Beta 57A has a slightly darker character with less mid honk, which gives it a smoother, more controlled sound that we’ve always appreciated. That darker top end makes it a great choice for lead guitars, and the fuller midrange works beautifully for hard rock, punk, and metal vocals. But if we had to pick one place where the Beta 57A truly lives, it’s on snare drum. We tend to get most of the snare’s crack from overheads, so the Beta 57A’s thicker body gives us the guts and weight we want from the close mic. Add in the supercardioid pattern and darker top, and hi-hat bleed stays minimal and easy to manage. And, of course, it’s built like every other Shure mic — practically indestructible. If you ever misplace your hammer, the Beta 57A could probably fill in… and still track a killer snare, vocal, or guitar later that day.
