The Oktava MK-012-01 Cardioid Microphone offers a natural smooth and musically balanced character with great off-axis rejection, ideal for drum overheads, acoustic guitar, and piano. Hand made in Tula Russia, this studio workhorse was designed with solid electronics and modular parts, giving you the ability to configure the MK-012-01 to your unique recording application. This stealthy black version fades into the background on stage, on camera and in the studio.

The Oktava MK-012-01 Cardioid Microphone is the most recognizable and well-regarded model in the Oktava lineup. It is a compact, high quality, small diaphragm microphone featuring a cardioid capsule. The MK-012-01 offers a smooth balanced response which provides an accurate and musical character for all sound sources. The small size of the microphone provides easy positioning, even in tight spaces. Designed to be modular, you can easily swap out the capsule and pad, making this mic a versatile powerhouse in the recording studio. The included -10 dB pad is ideal for high SPL environments, making the MK-012 perfect for drum overheads, snare drum, hand percussion, guitar cab, and more. Optional Omni and HyperCardioid capsules are available separately or included in the MK-012-02 and MK-012-03 Microphone Sets.  Whatever you configuration may be, Front End Audio is here to help you build your Oktava microphone system.

The new packaging features a high-end color printed flip box with magnetic closure and a rigid foam insert. This new packaging is designed to bring cohesiveness to the brand and provide the most protection for Oktava microphones during transportation and storage.

The Oktava MK-012-01 Cardioid Microphone has been a staple around our studio for a long time—close to 20 years—and it’s earned that spot the hard way: by simply working on just about everything we throw at it. Acoustic guitar and other stringed instruments, drum room and overheads, percussion, even dialogue… the MK-012 just keeps showing up and doing the job without fuss. What really makes the cardioid version special is the off-axis rejection. While in the studio, that tight and controlled pickup lets us capture a focused sound without weird phasey artifacts or messy bleed. It’s one of the reasons this mic shines in stereo applications. Whether we’re setting up a spaced pair, ORTF, or X/Y, the stereo image stays wide, natural, and solid. Drum overheads feel open and punchy, acoustic guitars sit beautifully in a mix, and pianos retain clarity without getting harsh. The transient response is another big win here. On drums and percussion, the MK-012 keeps things fast and articulate, while still sounding musical. Add in the tunable proximity effect and the ability to swap capsules if needed, and you’ve got a small diaphragm condenser that punches way above its price point.
