The Lindell Audio LiN 76 MKII Vintage Limiting Amplifier brings classic 76-style FET compression into the modern studio with updated performance, lower noise, and the same fast, punchy attitude engineers love for vocals, drums, bass, guitars, and mix bus tone-shaping.

Designed as a refined follow-up to the original LiN76, the LiN 76 MKII delivers everything from smooth, transparent dynamic control to explosive all-buttons-in compression. Its redesigned compression circuit improves performance and noise handling, while the custom Lindell transformer and vintage-inspired circuit choices give you plenty of tone to work with. The LiN 76 MKII also adds practical studio upgrades, including true bypass for quick A/B comparisons, RCA stereo linking for matched stereo operation with a second unit, an internal power supply, a rear-panel meter calibration trim, and a traditional 76-style attack/release control layout.

MKII - What's New
LiN76 mkII picks up where the LiN76 left off. Lindell updated their take on the classic 76 compressor with four years’ worth of customer feedback.

  • RCA jack for stereo linking - use two LiN76 mkIIs in balanced, matched stereo operation.
  • Updated and improved compression circuit. LiN76 mkII features a totally re-designed compressor circuit with much higher performance and low noise.
  • New internal power supply and IEC cable. No more bulky external power supply.
  • Traditional ‘76 control scheme for Attack/Release. Clockwise = faster, counter clockwise = slower.
  • True bypass: Quickly bypass the unit for quick A/B testing of your settings
  • New meter calibration pot for fine-tuning VU meter performance

    Analog compression rocks
    Brian

The Lin 76 makes everything sound better. I’ve used it on guitar cabs, drum overheads, acoustic guitar, pretty much everything. Even DI bass sounds fatter and warmer, punchier and more three dimensional. A friend of mine has a Warm Audio 1176 blue stripe. The Warm Audio sounds good, but is definitely more polite and clinical. The harmonic distortion from the Lin 76 is sweet and flatters pretty much anything you can throw at it. For its price it’s a steal.

Great Compressor, poor support from Lindell
    DoubleDog Recording

I really like this compressor. I'm mostly using it for vocal tracking, where even with light compression at 4:1 it can keep a singer from overloading my converters. And while it can do the transparent compression thing, it can also be driven into crazy, overblown territory (with all buttons in). It sounds cool on drums, bass, guitars - pretty much everywhere you would use an 1176. But...the attack and release knobs work opposite from a real 1176. Also, there are only TRS jacks and no XLR (which was OK for me since it was going straight to my patch bay). And the power supply is an AC adapter (actually an AC to AC adapter) so you need room to plug in an ugly wall wart. I attempted to contact Lindell support 3 times (via the form on their website - the only method they offer). First was to confirm the attack/release are supposed to work this way and were not just wired wrong, and they replied the same day. I then asked if there was a full users manual that documented any of this (as opposed to the quick start manual). no reply. I also noticed a rattling or clunking sound, which after opening the lid, I found was caused by the bracket holding the output transformer. I tightened up the 2 screws on the bottom of the chassis and it was fixed. But I thought I should report this to Lindell in case others have a similar issue (and I imagine there will be others because it is likely vibrating loose in shipping and could be easily prevented with a little Loctite). Again, no reply from Lindell. A 33% reply rate is a dismal failure for any support team. So while I really like the unit, I am concerned with Lindell's lack of support (otherwise I'd give 5 stars). Hopefully I never experience a major failure that requires help from Lindell because I'm not confident I would ever get a reply. So go ahead and buy one - it's a great deal. Just don't expect any support from Lindell.

What We Think

At this price point, I wasn't sure what to expect from the Lindell LiN 76..especially given the number of other 1176 style "clones/recreations" on the market. But after spending some time with this compressor, I was impressed! As 1176 FET style compressors are, this unit is very fast. And sonically, I feel it’s cleaner than some of it’s competition! That being said, speeding up the attack can add a nice weight to your track. This would be a great tracking compressor to have for things like bass guitar and vocals. But if you’re looking to slam/smash a mono drum room microphone or throw this on a parallel bus, it’s great for that too - at higher ratios. The “all buttons in mode” does that thing that 1176 style compressors do. And it does it well. As for the build quality, the LiN 76 looks and feels more expensive than it is. The buttons all feel good. And the pots are all stepped with good resistance. Lindell did a great job with the LiN 76 and for the money, I think you’d be hard pressed to find a better sounding 1176 style hardware compressor. Get one and hear it for yourself!
