Focusrite Scarlett 18i8 V3 USB Audio Interface

The Focusrite Scarlett 18i8 V3 USB Audio Interface is a q compact expandable 4micpre interface with extensive I/O capabilities

The third-generation Scarlett 18i8 is the perfect audio interface for recording engineers and producers who need to adapt to their recording environment, wherever they are. It offers eight analogue inputs: four mic/line inputs, two high-impedance, high-headroom instrument inputs and four additional fixed-line inputs on the rear. An optical input allows for expansion of up to eight additional channels for larger recording sessions. And with improved A-D and D-A conversion, your recordings and playback will sound clear and pronounced up to 24-bit/192kHz, vital to helping you perfect your mix.

Scarlett 18i8 features four of Focusrite’s best-ever-performing third-generation Scarlett mic preamps: with optional Air setting to reproduce the Air effect of their original ISA mic preamp, giving your vocal or acoustic recordings a brighter and more opensound. There’s a pad on every mic preamp to accommodate higher-level signals without clipping. Scarlett 18i8 offers two extra line outputs over the previous generation, and speaker switching technology for dual monitor setups. Two independent headphone outputs allow for both engineer and artist to monitor during recording sessions, and a pair of virtual loopback inputs allows you to capture a stereo feed of any combination of hardware input and software playback channels –making podcasting, live streaming and sampling tasks easier.

Scarlett 18i8 is designed to stand up to days on the road, and connects straight to your Mac® or PC via USB cable. It comes with all the software tools you need to get started: two comprehensive digital audio workstations, Ableton® Live Lite™ and Pro Tools® First Focusrite Creative Pack; Softube’s Time and Tone Bundle; Focusrite’s Red Plug-in Suite; a choice of one of four of XLN Audio’s Addictive Keys.

If that wasn't enough, Focusrite have partnered with Splice to give 3rd Gen. interface owners a free 3-month Splice Sounds subscription when setting a new Splice account. it is ok

the pre-amps are good but I think there is a lack luster converter on it I recently upgraded and it made a world of difference I suggest a outboard pre amp if you use this interface as well phoenix audio works well with it.

    Best for the price

Posted by Jason Caffee on Jan 22nd 2014

This is a very solid unit. Great construction, small footprint, great focus rite Pre's, good i/o options, and its expandable. Setup was pretty straight forward.

My only gripe is that you have to use the provided software application to do simple things like switch between inst and mic levels and enable the pad. I would prefer to have this functionality on the hardware itself. That being said, the software is very versatile and adds some great functionality to the unit. You can set up different mixes and route them to separate headphone outs, etc...

This is definitely a go-to unit in the sub $500 interface category.

    Good Interface for the Price

Posted by Erik on Nov 12th 2013

Decent interface for the price. Accepted 8 channels of 48kHz audio over the optical ADAT connection perfectly. However, I had some issues while simultaneously receiving digital data over optical ADAT and coaxial S/PDIF, and a mic plugged into one of the 18i8's pres. I contacted Focusrite support (who was VERY courteous and responded right away), and he verified that I had the proper connection scheme to keep everything clocked properly. But I still had annoying pops in the audio.

If you are going to use either S/PDIF or ADAT inputs, then this interface is pretty good. But both at the same time just wasn't working for me.

The good, the bad, and the... well good!

Posted by Bart Baldwin on Sep 12th 2013

As someone who is new to editing/mixing audio (for video production) I am really glad I came across the Focusrite Scarlett 18i8 USB Audio Interface! Using "regular" mixers I have had very mixed results (pun not intended). I have found it difficult to get multiple mic input levels even using those types of mixers. That's until the 18i8 Audio Interface! Now I can easily SEE each mic input's levels and make adjustments as needed to get an even and well balanced mix. That's the good.

The only "bad" I have to say about the 18i8 Audio Interface is that it's USB and doesn't include a Firewire and/or Thunderbolt option. Having said that, that's not really "bad" because the USB works just fine. No skips, lags, or any issues whatsoever due to the USB interface speed.

Overall, I love my Focusrite Scarlett 18i8 USB Audio Interface and I am extremely happy that it is now a major component in my audio editing/mixing process.
