The Coil Audio CA-70S MK2 Preamp is a signal channel microphone preamp based on a vintage early 1900's design, and hand built and tested in the USA! The CA-70S MK2 provides a robust musical tone that can be dialed in from present to in you face.
The Coil Audio CA-70S MK2 Preamp is based on a two-stage circuit invented by Western Electric in 1913. It was licensed and built by various audio manufacturers from the 1930s through the 1950s. RCA, Gates, Western Electric, and Langevin were just a few that utilized this elegant and simple single-ended design. With the addition of a flexible input pad network, our Negative Feedback tone shaping, and inter-stage volume control, it's like Mid Century with a Modern twist. Each amplifier utilizes our CT110HN and CT41 custom transformers, as well as the same high end and vintage components as our larger PS6 modules.
MK2 Version
The Coil Audio CA-70S MK2 Preamp builds on the original’s beloved tone with a few thoughtful updates that make it even more versatile in modern recording workflows. The input section now includes an additional 2k microphone impedance setting, giving you better control over hotter condenser microphones - especially useful for sources like DPA and certain Neumann models that can overload at the standard 150Ω setting, while still providing more usable gain than the line input. The negative feedback control has also been upgraded from a carbon potentiometer to a precision 12-position switch, offering improved recall and allowing the circuit to open up further for increased gain and tonal flexibility. Beyond these enhancements, the MK2 retains everything that made the original so special - identical components, transformers, and NOS tubes - so you’re getting the same classic sound, just with more control where it counts.
Phantom Power
The Coil Audio CA-70S MK2 Preamp does NOT feature phantom power, which is required for use with condenser microphones. If you plan to use this with a condenser microphone, you will also need the Coil Audio CP-448 Phantom Power Supply or another phantom power supply.
