    Bang for the buck!
    John S. Trageser

Another solid performer at the price range. I've only had time to try it on guitar amps so far, but it hasn't disappointed. It had a bit more low mids in the frequency response (and hence more body on the guitar amp) than the Studio Projects B-series, but it didn't get muddy as long as I started with decent placement. One characteristic you might want to know: the protective case they send it in is HUGE! It's a molded plastic box about 6" x 8" with cut-out foam that does a great job of protecting the mic and the shockmount.

Not sure what to make of it yet, but it's good
    Gabriel

This is an amazing value, and while it doesn't feel particularly well-made (two halves riveted together with cheesy plastic switches), with its continuously variable pickup pattern it can be useful for pretty much any sound you'd want to record. And it sounds good, with plenty of its own character. It's less lively but possibly more realistic than a Rode NT1a. I bought a pair primarily for toms, but they sounds respectable, not harsh, on vocals, guitar, and upright piano as well. However, a fair level of hum is produced when using the pickup pattern wheel, and I've had problems with a faint background hum when recording highly-compressed quiet sounds. None of my other LDCs have given me problems with hum. Luckily there is a two-year warranty, so if hum gets any worse I'll be in OK shape.

    Perfect

I couldn't settle for just one of these-- its a beautiful all-around mic that sounds especially smooth on vocals.

    CAD M179
    Peter Young

I have owned these and other CAD mics through the years. Let's see, a continuously variable pattern and a nice even response up and down. A no brainer. I own 2 of these and I think over the years I have used them on just about everything I can think of. A great all purpose mic.

    Very good allrounder
    Freppo Parasit

I bought a M179 because of the hype that it sounds great on toms, but I was disappointed. It sounded "ploppy" and hollow when the drummer was hitting the tom hard, almost as if it was distorting (the pad was engaged). Maybe I got a bad one.. I dunno. I'll be keeping my MD421's for toms. However, I found that it sounded great as a OH mic and overall allround mic for some vocals and acoustic guitars. I will get a second one for OH duty until I can afford a pair of c414. Awesome microphone at this price.

    A superb package!

I've spent a fair bit of time reading, watching, and listening to reviews of different microphones to start a hobby "studio". This was my choice microphone because of it's quality, price, and features. With the bundled 25' XLR cable and popfilter, this package is hard to pass up on. Thanks for the great products and service!

    Good Beginner mic
    Joe Genuino

I bought this to track toms, but just for curiosity, I used it on some female vocals and found it to have a presence lift in the upper frequencies, giving it almost a little too much upper shimmer but still not enough to make it dis-tasteful, in fact it gives that crisp cut through sound that many people desire. Up against my U87, you can tell that its not flat at all, but I'd say its the best bang for the buck for the home studio enthusiast. Buy a couple!

    crystal sound
    Nedyalka Ivanova

Great all purposes mic! Few patterns, grabs every frequency! Good for any instrument or voice, on a great price! Case is a little too big if you'll be carrying other things, but otherwise is pretty safe.

What We Think

The M179 is a great all purpose mic. I like to refer to them as the SM57s of Condenser Mics. It has a clean and neutral sound that makes them great on any sound source. It's fantastic on drum overheads, one of the main applications I use them on. The M179's are priced so right using them for toms is a no-brainer (see our FEA multi-packs), and they sound good on many vocals, guitar cabs, (great on) acoustic instruments - everyone should own a pair! The completely variable pattern is a strong attribute as well. My pair is on every recording session I do.
