This compact, self-powered reference monitor is designed to emphasize the critical midrange and help reveal balance problems that can hide on full-range studio monitors. By approximating the limited-bandwidth playback experience of car stereos, televisions, computers, portable speakers, and other everyday listening systems, MixCubes provide a practical reality check for mixing and mastering decisions. Avantone developed the active MixCubes around a proprietary 5.25-inch full-range driver featuring a cast aluminum frame and a specially crafted paper cone. The single-driver design eliminates a crossover from the signal path, providing a direct, coherent presentation that makes it easier to concentrate on vocals, guitars, snare, keyboards, and other mix elements occupying the all-important midrange. Each monitor also incorporates its own Class A/B amplifier, eliminating the need for an external power amp and making the system easy to integrate into professional studios, production rooms, and mobile setups.The sealed 18mm MDF enclosure is compact enough to fit where another conventional monitor system may not, while a recessed 5/8"-27 microphone stand mount provides additional placement flexibility. A neoprene pad built into the base helps provide a stable, acoustically isolated surface when the monitors are placed on a desk, console bridge, or other work surface. Whether you are checking vocal placement, balancing instruments, judging intelligibility, or simply making sure a mix holds together on smaller playback systems, the active MixCubes provide a revealing perspective that complements your main studio monitors.

    This is the modern heir to the Auratone, better known as "horrortone" for their . . . less than audiophile sound. But the truth is, if you want mixes that translate better to real world situations, this thing is worth its weight in gold. But make sure you're sending it a mono signal!

    I purchased a single cube for mono reference and simple mix levels. I use an SPL 2Control. I am pleased with the response of the cube and its ability to provide a clean reference for levels. I have been using for approx 3 weeks and have saved a significant amount of time dialing in mixes that translate to other environments.
