What We Think

avatar

The Audix PDX720 is one of those microphones that quickly earns the “just put it up” status in the studio. While using it across a wide range of sessions, it proved itself to be one of the most versatile dynamic mics we’ve worked with. It plays well with virtually any preamp, handles just about any sound source with ease, and somehow manages to sound great every single time. The hotter-than-average output for a dynamic mic is a big part of that — it’s easy to get strong, usable levels without having to lean hard on gain. The onboard high-pass and presence filters make dialing in tone quick and intuitive, and the overall character is smooth, punchy, and musical. There’s a natural lift that makes sources feel more alive without sounding hyped or artificial. While Audix often highlights the PDX720 for vocals, voiceover, and broadcast work — and it absolutely excels there — we’ve had equally great results on guitar cabs, bass cabs, drums, drum overheads, and pretty much anything else we’ve pointed it at. It’s one of those rare mics where you stop questioning whether it’s “right” for the job and just start recording. And then there’s the build. The integrated mount, the weight, the machining, the finish — everything about the PDX720 feels intentional and premium. It’s a dynamic mic that feels as good in your hand as it sounds coming back through the monitors. Audix really nailed it with this one. It’s a true do-it-all microphone that can easily go toe-to-toe with many condensers, and one we wouldn’t hesitate to recommend for just about any studio.
