The Avenson Audio STO-2 Microphones is a pressure transducer stereo pair. So are your ears. No Coincidence. Avenson Audio started out looking for a natural sounding mic and this is what they came up with. Sold in matched pairs, (two ears right?) the Avenson Audio STO-2 Microphones are perfect for capturing instruments that need no flattery. With a matched pair, stereo is no problem - Jecklin disk or spaced pair - it will sound like you are standing there.

Made in the USA from solid aluminum, the Avenson Audio STO-2 Microphones are built to withstand the rigors of the studio or the road.

At only 5″ long and 1″ diameter, they are easy to position and fit in standard mic clips (included - but, we can recommend optional 3rd party suspension mounts).

    Avenson STO-2 mics

I was truly blown away by the quality of these mics. I don't often use omnis, but these are truly everything that was described about them by both by the manufacturer and by the users who have posted online. I made my decision to purchase them based on the rave reviews. I have also used DPA's and these come pretty close for a lot less $.

Not bad, but not Earthworks mics
    Sandor

I got these thinking what a bargain these are, compared to the way more expensive Earthworks omni mics. Well, I can tell you now that you definitely get what you pay for...The Avensons aren't bad, but they don't produce the kind of special, open and present sound that (IMHO) Earthworks omnis produce. Pluse, they're definitely noisier, so use a good pre.

What We Think

The first time we ever heard the Avenson Audio STO-2 Microphones, it was when we were doing a small diaphragm condenser shootout here at Front End Audio. We were immediately struck by the overwhelming depth and realism that we were experiencing from them. When we say that it sounds like you are standing there - we ain't kidding. There is something really special about a very small but high-quality omni-directional electret-condenser element that is powered by a high quality and quiet on-board amplifier. We have used these as room microphones for drum recording and also on acoustic instruments - and will continue to do so. And we would even go so far as to use the Avenson Audio STO-2 Microphones for recording electric guitars for a for the tonal qualities (perhaps a jazz session, perhaps even rock - try it!). But then again, they're great up close because omni microphones don't have a pronounced proximity effect. So, feedback really doesn't become a big issue due to the primacy of the source (though a good digital HPF always comes in handy when you're dealing with live sound). Omni microphones have another advantage in that the off-axis response is virtually the same as the on-axis. As a result, the lack of coloration in the off-axis response, means that the bleed that you do get is far more natural and useful than with cardioid or hyper-cardioid mics. They are killer for live recording and you might wish to use a jecklin disk for a more natural separation from right and left when capturing the room. A great pair of dedicated omni-mics is a must-have in my opinion. The only thing to watch out for is self-noise. Very small elements like this need some additional power in the on-board amplifier circuitry. So, try to match them up with a preamp with lots of phantom power current, and plenty of headroom. But if you don't have that and do pretty loud and raucous music, then it's sort-of a non-issue. But when the chips are down, the Avenson Audio STO-2 Pair is at the top of our list of highly cost-effective and great sounding microphone recommendations.
