The Sony C800G Tube Microphone is an iconic tube condenser, known and loved for it's full ranged balanced and smooth sound, with lifted clarity and dimensional bigness. The C800G is like reality enhanced with a musical tone that let's vocals and dynamic sound sources (like acoustic stringed instruments) shine with a presence that sits perfectly on top of the mix.

The Sony C800G Tube Microphone is particularly suitable for critical vocal recording in recording studios and movie and video post-production houses, where sound clarity and nuance are essential. The use of a rigorously selected vacuum tube gives this microphone its superb sonic quality, particularly at high frequencies and with exceptionally low noise levels. With a wide dynamic range and ability to resolve subtle sound detail, the sonic quality is expressed as rich, natural, and sensitive with an outstanding response to fast transients. With a high sensitivity of –32 dB/Pa, this microphone can capture subtle nuances at high frequencies with low noise levels and minimum distortion.

The first microphone in the world to incorporate a built-in thermo-electric cooling system employing a semiconductor device, heat pipe, and heat sink, which greatly contribute to the low noise and low distortion characteristics. The design incorporates a two-part body construction that effectively helps prevent acoustic vibration from reaching the microphone capsule, resulting in clarity of reproduction.

Perfect for Modern Pop (but outstanding across all genres)
    Omar

Even as a beginner audio engineer, I decided to equip my studio right away with what truly feels like the crown jewel of professional recording: the Sony C-800G. Recommended to me by top-tier studios and engineers as the absolute benchmark on the market, it delivers exceptional openness, purity, and high-fidelity capture that sets a new standard for vocal recording. I can fully confirm all the hype surrounding this microphone. It performs flawlessly on male and female vocals, shines in modern pop—my main genre—but also holds its ground in rock, metal, R&B, EDM, and beyond. The consistency, clarity, and sonic integrity you get straight out of the box are game-changing. It’s a premium investment, but the value is undeniable from the very first take. It has become my one true microphone love.

I recently got the Sony C800G Tube Microphone from Front End Audio, and wow, it sounds amazing! I've used all the big named mics before, but the C800G is special. The way it captures my vocals is just super clear, you can hear every little detail. Legendary!

What We Think

The Sony C800G is one of those microphones you hear about for years — and then the first time you actually use one, it all makes sense. While tracking with it in the studio, the word that kept coming up for us was purity. What you put into this mic is exactly what comes back out: every nuance, every detail, every bit of articulation is there, clear and unmistakable. But somehow, it’s never clinical. There’s a warmth and musicality baked in that just makes the performance feel elevated. On vocals, the C800G does what it’s famous for. It has a way of lifting a voice up and letting it sit front and center without sounding pushed or hyped — like the mic is gently saying, “this deserves to be heard.” The dimensionality is huge, and the sense of life it captures is honestly a little addictive. And while it’s clearly designed with vocals in mind, we’ve also been blown away using it on acoustic guitars and piano, where that same clarity and depth translate beautifully. The C800G has real magic to it — the kind that doesn’t shout, doesn’t exaggerate, and doesn’t get in the way. It simply captures performances at their very best, and that’s why it’s earned its legendary status.
