The Shure KSM42 Microphone is a premium large-diaphragm condenser microphone built for exceptional vocal recording clarity and warmth. Its dual-diaphragm design and ultra-low-noise circuitry deliver smooth, natural sound. The KSM42 is perfect for professional singers and engineers who demand pristine studio recordings.

The Shure KSM42 is a premium side-address, large dual-diaphragm cardioid condenser microphone designed for critical studio vocal recording and high-level performance applications. Its dual-diaphragm capsule features a 1″ ultra-thin 24-karat gold-coated Mylar front diaphragm and a passive back diaphragm that together deliver exceptionally smooth proximity control and a broad “sweet spot” with a natural off-axis response.

In addition to its advanced capsule design, the KSM42 incorporates Shure's Prethos Advanced Preamplifier Technology for ultra-low self-noise, wide dynamic range, outstanding transient response and ultra-low distortion—ideal for capturing sophisticated, powerful and intimate vocal performances. The rugged design includes a zinc die-cast housing, hardened low-carbon-steel grille, internal shock mount and an integrated three-stage mesh grille + open-cage ShureLock rubber suspension with Popper Stopper™ magnetic pop filter, giving professional-level durability and recording clarity.

Shure KSM42 Microphone Features

  • Highly consistent cardioid polar pattern creates a broad “sweet spot” and natural off-axis response
  • Dual-diaphragm design: front active diaphragm is ultra-thin 24-karat gold-coated Mylar; back (passive) diaphragm for exceptional control of low-frequency proximity effect
  • Tailored low-frequency roll-off minimizes low-frequency room noise (helpful when recording vocals in less-than-perfect rooms)
  • Integrated three-stage mesh grille guards against wind and breath noise
  • Open-cage ShureLock rubber-suspension shock mount with low-profile Popper Stopper magnetic pop filter provides a “natural space” between performer and mic and reduces handling/stand noise
  • Prethos Advanced Preamplifier Technology for ultra-low self-noise, wide dynamic range, excellent transient response and ultra-low distortion — contributing to transparent, high-fidelity recording
  • Premium electronic components; gold-plated internal & external connectors
  • Durable zinc die-cast housing, hardened low-carbon-steel grille, internal shock mount for further handling/stand isolation

    KSM for the Win!
    Ben Mackie

I've had mine for over 10 years now, it was my first good mic and gateway into the world of condensers - and I still love it. I'll often turn to the KSM when micing a guitar cab or by the soundhole on an acoustic. It's warm and inviting, with a top-end that's bright but not too brittle. Great mic for a home studio enthusiast!
