The Samar MG33 Microphone is a side-addressed small diaphragm cardioid condenser microphone that features low noise, a smooth and very balanced response, low distortion and excellent low and high-end extension.

Don’t let the Samar MG33's compact size and modest price tag give you the wrong impression. Its is very high-quality original designs, featuring low noise, and a smooth and very balanced response, with low distortion, and excellent low and high-end extension. The Samar MG33 is an ideal solution for demanding professional engineers, studios, artists, as well as home recording enthusiasts, to make the highest quality recordings, especially in environments where the compact size of the microphone is of the essence. The microphone is built at the company’s Salt Lake City-based shop.

The MG33 is designed by the company’s founder Dr. Mark Fouxman. As with any Samar microphone, extraordinary attention was put into the shape of the body and its acoustical properties. An unusual, innovative, and optimized acoustical lens eliminates standing waves, reflections, and wave interference, and allows for minimal phase distortion anomalies along with excellent off-axis response. The MG33 uses the same capsule as Samar's highly acclaimed MG20. For low distortion, the highest possible sonics, sound quality, and years of dependability, the MG33 use the highest quality electronic parts, such as SMD Vishay-Dale resistors and through-hole Wima capacitors in the signal chain.

The Samar MG33 offers balanced, neutral sound, along with the excellent low-end response, and the non-harsh sonic nature on the high end, makes it suitable for a wide range of applications, such as pop, jazz, and classical piano, string instruments, brass instruments, acoustic guitars, drum overheads, percussions, room microphones, orchestra, and choir among other recording, broadcast, and classical music applications. It is especially suitable for environments where compact size is important. It is perfect for live sound reinforcement, concert recordings, drum and percussion sessions, and any place where a small unobtrusive footprint is needed.

What We Think

avatar

The Samar MG33 is one of those microphones that completely defies expectations the moment you put it up. While setting it up in the studio, it’s easy to underestimate it because of its tiny footprint — and then you hit record. This thing sounds big. It was clearly designed with drums in mind, and once we started using it on a kit, it all made sense. The MG33 handles high SPL without breaking a sweat, delivers detailed and controlled transients, and brings a thickness to drums that feels confident and powerful. What really stood out to us was the weight in the low mids and mids. Even though it shares a capsule lineage with other Samar designs, the MG33 has extra fullness that makes drums sound punchy and substantial, not thin or polite. The compact, side-address format also makes placement incredibly easy — you can get it exactly where you want it without fighting stands or cluttering the kit (your drummer will thank you). Samar set out to build a great drum mic, and they absolutely nailed it. Just don’t be surprised when you start reaching for it on more than just drums once it’s in the locker.
