The Ehrlund EHR-M Microphone was created for studio use. it has been designed to deliver the cleanest sound possible. Its patented triangular membrane design has been allied to a patented very low noise and low power phantom feed amplifier. The EHR-M has both broad and smooth pickup characteristics, with deep bass and extended treble. This microphone has impressive stats in self-induced noise, sensitivity and frequency range. The output signal is strong and usually does not need much amplification.

    The attraction to buy this microphone was because it was Swedish, claimed a frequency range to 87Khz, and had a self noise less than 7dB. First impressions are that it is very "open" grill with the distinctive triangular capsule, quite light with an aluminum shell, and rather "hot" in terms of output. Given there is no pad, close miking guitar amps and loud electric instruments might not practical. Placing the Ehrlund back from the subject allows this microphone to really shine with a natural presence which makes it ideal for grand piano,cellos and double basses, other acoustic stringed instruments and percussion. It handles dynamics with ease without any trill top end, but I can imagine some would not be so keen on this microphone because it can have a brutal honesty opposed to those who prefer a bit of "musical" coloration.One might say it is primarily a sound capturing instrument, and if the sound is musical, it will capture that music palette faithfully. Because of its dynamic capture range, I could see great application with this microphone for foley and atmospherics in film making. This might appear to be a strange esoteric animal in the microphone zoo, but a great addition to the microphone locker if you appreciate its special characteristics.

    I purchased one of these mics to compare with the Roswell Pro Audio Colares and the Austrian Audio OC818's. All three are great mics, and worthy work horses in any professional or project studio. The OC818 was slightly warmer sounding than the EHR-M, and the Colares had a lot of character that was great on voices that had a lot of interest already (it seemed to enhance that) and it was a bit fuller on the bottom end, while retaining all the detail and sparkle on top without being overly bright. The OC818 was "more transparent" than the Colares, but they are supposed to be that way and it's a good thing in both of their sound. The Ehrlund EHR-M is a whole other beast. I've never heard a mic as transparent and crystal clear articulate as this mic. It's triangular diaphragm is no gimmick, it's a revelation. Never overly bright or hyped... but incredibly detailed and invisible. The bottom end is all there but even it seems more clearly defined. You don't really hear the EHR-M... you just hear what is in front of it. And you hear what is in front of it like you've never heard anything before. It's stunningly good. It sounds like you are just right in front of your vocalist or cellist or guitarist, without any piece of hardware kit between you and them - at all. Smooth, transparent and startlingly clear without ever being hyped or harsh… smooth, sweet, musical magic is what it is. I can add saturation, distortion and warmth with a plugin or pre-amp. I can't get this original pristine signal out of any other mic. I now own a stereo pair. You should too! Amazing mic. Simply stunning.

When we started using the Ehrlund EHR-M, the first thing that stood out was just how natural it sounded. There’s an openness and realism to this microphone that immediately puts it in a different category. While working with it on acoustic instruments, we were struck by how wide and effortless the frequency response feels. On paper, Ehrlund’s published range is pretty jaw-dropping, but what really matters is how that translates in practice — and in use, the EHR-M delivers a sense of depth, clarity, and realism that’s genuinely smile-inducing. One of our favorite discoveries while tracking with the EHR-M was the way its low-mid presence behaves. There’s a gentle bloom that adds power and warmth without ever tipping into boominess or mud. On acoustic guitar sessions, this allowed us to place the mic a bit farther back than usual, capturing more of the instrument’s full body and wood tone while still retaining depth and focus. We also noticed how clearly the upper mids translate performance details — pick attack, finger movement, and percussive nuances all come through with an almost high-definition level of realism. There’s definitely something special happening with Ehrlund’s triangular capsule design. What really seals the deal is how all of this detail is presented. The EHR-M delivers extended highs and upper-mid shimmer that sound open and dimensional, yet never harsh or brittle. Even with its clarity and brightness, there’s a pleasant softness to the sound that keeps everything musical and easy on the ears. The result is a microphone that feels full-range, warm, detailed, and spacious all at once — with a dimensional openness you don’t typically expect from a solid-state design. It’s a truly inspiring mic, and one that rewards careful listening every time we put it up.
