The Pinnacle Fat Top Ribbon Microphone

The Fat Top Ribbon Microphone from Pinnacle Microphones (formerly Cascade Microphones) is a short passive ribbon microphone with warm tone and fast response. Thanks to its fast response and maximum SPL of 135 db, the Fat Top (formerly Fat Head) is ideal for recording guitar, piano, brass and percussion instruments. 

With its bi-directional polar pattern, the Fat Top can record sound from both sides, and the large null between faces helps isolate sound sources. When using the back side of the microphone, simply flip the phase on your pre-amp to achieve the same sound as the front. Pinnacle microphones have a hand-tuned element with a symmetrical ribbon design offering a true figure-8 pattern. The corrugated aluminum membrane is positioned precisely in the center from front to back resulting in balanced audio from both sides to the ribbon assembly.

With a pair of Fat Top Ribbon Microphones they can be used in a Blumlein setup to capture the sound of an entire room.

If you're into mods, it's well known that the Fat Top can also be upgraded with Lundahl or Cinemag transformers offering improved definition and extended low and high frequencies.

If you're wondering if there's any difference in sound or build quality between the highly regarded Cascade microphones and the new Pinnacle branded mics, rest assured they're the same right down to the screws – just a new name.
