The APEX 185B Pencil Microphones are a matched pair of APEX 185 multi-pattern pencil condensers perfect for any application where perfect stereo imaging is required.

The APEX 185B Pencil Microphones are a matched pair of the most versatile microphones in any engineers' toolkit. Ideal for use tight on drum kits and cymbals (when using the cardioid capsules), overhead on drum kits (when using the omnidirectional capsules) on acoustic guitars, stringed instruments, acoustic pianos, ambient vocals and brass or woodwind sections. The cardioid capsules are generally used for live sound reinforcement or recording applications where wide dynamic range and good off-axis rejection is required. The omnidirectional capsules can be used in the studio or for live recording where off-axis rejection isn't an issue, and the engineer wants to limit proximity effect or needs a wider non-directional pickup pattern. The APEX 185 has two switches on the microphone body. The -10dB pad switch allows the engineer to reduce the microphone's output when close miking high sound pressure souces like brass and woodwind instruments or when using the APEX 185 on drums or percussion instruments. The low-frequency roll-off switch allows the user to reduce low frequency 'clutter' in the audio signal at the source, making for cleaner recorded tracks with increased presence and definition. The matched pair of APEX 185 come with IMC-9 shockmount cradles to better isolate the capsules when using the microphones for most delicate recording or live sound reinforcement applications.

    Excellent Low End Theory
    Tastey Sound

While it may be true that there are more expensive options out there that will yield impressive lab results, in truth you'd be hard pressed to surpass these mics in the real world. Sure, there may be German mics that have a "better" overall sound. But then you wouldn't be looking at these APEX mics in the first place. Excellent tonal response through the whole spectrum. Metal body keeps the dings at a minimum, and the included shock mounts are top notch. XLR connector is a nice and tight fit. Interchangeable capsules get the job done without complaint.

Good Sound - Great Price - Hard not to like
    David @ Orpheum

I needed an immediate replacement for my AKG c1000s that had been stolen. I bought the set of of 185's to act as live overheads, X/Y and spaced pair stereo mics. I will say their self noise is greater than the c1000 especially compared to the c1000s battery powered mode, but these mics were surprisingly pleasant in their capture of sound. They worked great as overheards live and studio. And the interchangeable capsules allowed me to experiment with spaced pair in omni and works well as a hi hat mic. In cardioid, the 185 worked favorably on acoustic guitar and as an X/Y pair. The pad and low cut are a great and noted upgrades over the 180s. There is a noticeable sizzle in the 5k plus range and they have character as compared to the otherwise straight response of the c1000. I recommend them to entry level recording students and hobbyists and to PRO live setups and studios alike. Plus I hear there is an inexpensive mod that can greatly improve the quality of these mics.
