The Serpent Audio Splice 500 MKII 500-Series Compressor pack many of the same features, functions, and character that it's big brother (the Standalone Splice MKII) offers, and impressively proves that size does not matter. This powerful 500 series compressor is based on four unique, and loved, classic FET circuits.

The Serpent Audio Splice MKII SA-76 500-Series Compressor packs all of the sound and functionality of the acclaimed Splice MKII rack into a single 500 series module. Faithfully recreating the circuitry and sound of not one, but two classic FET compressors, the Splice-500’s unique mode switching allows the user to switch between the classic Blackface or vintage Bluestripe circuits at the push of a button. In addition, the Splice-500 can also mix and match the two for entirely new sounds that can only be found with the Splice (i.e. Blue Input Circuitry + Black Output Circuitry for “Blueface” mode or Black Input Circuitry + Blue Output Circuitry for “Blackstripe” mode.

The SPLICE-500 MKII can be stereo linked with a second unit for stereo applications using the supplied cable. To connect two SPLICE-500 MKII units together, connect the supplied cable from J202 on unit “A” to J202 on unit “B”. The link wire can be secured in the wire hook on the PCB. Stereo mode is enabled by placing the “Link” toggle switch on both units to the up position.

What We Think

avatar

The Serpent Audio Splice 500 MKII is one of those 500-series compressors that makes you do a double take the first time you patch it in. While using it in the studio, what immediately stood out was how faithfully it delivers the same attitude and tone we expect from its full-size sibling — but in a much more compact, rack-friendly format. Being able to get that sound in a 500-series module makes building multiple channels far more practical, and it’s a great way to bring serious FET compression into a smaller footprint. Once we started tracking and mixing with the Splice 500 MKII, it quickly proved it could handle just about anything we threw at it. Guitars stayed punchy, bass sat solid and controlled, vocals stayed forward without getting squashed, and drums… well, drums are where this thing really starts to smile back at you. Link a pair for stereo bus duties and suddenly the kit feels tighter, bigger, and more alive — the kind of result that makes you look around the room and nod in approval. It’s got that classic FET compressor energy we all know and rely on, but with enough flexibility to make it feel right at home in modern sessions. If you’re building a serious 500-series setup, grabbing two of these isn’t a luxury — it’s a very good idea.
