The Pultec EQP-1S3 Program Equalizer is a hand-built tube-based program EQ that offers enhanced tonal flexibility beyond the classic Pultec EQP-1A by providing expanded options. It delivers classic warmth, depth, and harmonic richness, making it a versatile tool for the studio.
The (formerly) extremely-rare EQP-1S3 has the same wide-bandwidth line amp as the EQP-1A3, but has modified low-frequency boost/atten response curves, adds 2 additional peak boost frequencies (1k & 2k) and most-importantly adds 2 high-frequency shelf boost curves (5k & 10k corners) to the sonic palette. The originals included 6k peak boost in place of the 16k and that’s the way they were built initially. But they had so many requests from customers for the 16k and so little interest in the 6k that they now build them with the 16k peak boost center.
Pultec EQP-1S3 Program Equalizer Features
- Passive EQ with tube makeup gain: Like other classic Pultec models, the EQP-1S3 uses a passive inductor-capacitor circuit for equalization, followed by a tube-based Class-A amplifier to restore signal gain. This imparts a pleasant harmonic richness and coloration.
- "Pultec Trick": The low-frequency controls operate independently, allowing engineers to simultaneously boost and cut the same low-frequency band. This creates a signature "resonant shelf" curve that can add weight and punch to the low end while preventing it from becoming muddy.
- Expanded frequency selection: Compared to the EQP-1A, the EQP-1S3 offers greater tonal flexibility with a wider range of selectable frequencies.
- Adjustable high-frequency bandwidth: A "bandwidth" control knob allows you to adjust the Q (width) of the high-frequency boost curve from narrow to broad, offering precise or gentle tonal shaping.
- Dedicated bypass switch: Unlike some vintage units, the EQP-1S3 features a true bypass, but even with the EQ bypassed, the audio signal passes through the amplifier and transformers, adding subtle coloration.
- High-quality components: Current reissues from Pulse Techniques are hand-built in the USA using original-spec components to replicate the sound of vintage units.
