The Pultec EQP-1S Program Equalizer is a vintage-style tube program equalizer and is variant of the more common Pultec EQP-1A. The EQP-1S offers expanded frequency options for greater flexibility.
The EQP-1S has the same wide-bandwidth line amp as the EQP-1A/EQP-1A3 units, but have modified low-frequency boost/atten response curves, add 2 additional peak boost frequencies, and most-importantly add 2 high-frequency shelf boost curves to the sonic palette. This makes it highly effective for vocals, guitars, and mastering. So with this EQ, you have modified low-frequency curves with different selectable points (e.g., 30Hz, 40Hz) compared to the EQP-1A's standard 20, 30, 60, and 100Hz. The EQP-1S's high-band also adds peak frequencies at 1kHz, 2kHz, 3kHz, and 6kHz alongside a broader overall range up to 12kHz. This is a very useful EQ. A key feature is the ability to simultaneously boost and attenuate the same low-frequency band. This creates the famous "Pultec low-end trick," which adds a defined, tight bass without creating a muddy sound.
Pultec EQP-1S Program Equalizer Features
- Tube-based circuit: The EQP-1S combines a passive inductor-based EQ circuit with a tube makeup amplifier, using a 12AX7, 12AU7, and a 6X4 tube in the original design. This combination delivers its signature warm, clear, and euphonic analog tone.
- Two-band equalization: The unit has two main EQ sections, a low-frequency shelving band and a high-frequency peak/shelf band.
- Boost and cut at the same time: The EQP-1S allows for simultaneous boosting and attenuating of the same frequency. This creates a unique EQ curve that adds a resonant boost while gently scooping out the adjacent frequencies, a technique famously used on kick drums and bass.
- Expanded frequency options (vs. EQP-1A): The EQP-1S provides more frequencies for shaping compared to the EQP-1A.
- Adjustable high-frequency bandwidth (Q): The "Bandwidth" control on the high-frequency boost section allows for adjusting the sharpness or breadth of the EQ curve.
- High-quality construction: Modern recreations are hand-built to exacting original specifications, using high-end components to deliver vintage character with modern reliability.
- Low noise floor: Engineered to have a low noise floor for clean, transparent signal processing.
- Transformer-coupled: Features input and output transformers that contribute to its characteristic sonic color and "glue".
