The Pultec EQH-2 Program Equalizer is a vintage single-channel, tube-powered program equalizer known for its transparent sound and ability to shape low-end and high-frequency content. It offers a more compact alternative to the Pultec EQP-1A.

The EQH-2 was originally introduced in 1956, as a compact option to the 3U model EQP-1. The low-frequency boost/atten curves are identical to those of the EQP-1A and the high-frequency peak boost frequency centers are comparable to those of the EQP-1A. The EQH-2 has fixed bandwidth for the high-frequency peak boost and a fixed high-frequency attenuation frequency of 10 kHz. The line amp is the same minimalist class A output stage as used in the MEQ-5. Many engineers, among them well-known L.A./Nashville engineer/producer Dave Cobb and Michael Dumas, believe it provides a more transparent sound than the EQP-1A/EQP-1A3.

Pultec EQH-2 Program Equalizer Features

  • Tube-driven gain stage: A passive EQ circuit is followed by a Class A tube makeup amplifier to restore the signal level lost during equalization. The tube complement includes 1 x 12AX7, 1 x 6AQ5, and 1 x 6X4.
  • Transparent sonic signature: The EQH-2 uses the same Class A output stage as the MEQ-5, giving it a more transparent sound than the EQP-1A.
  • Two-band equalization: It features a low-frequency shelf and a high-frequency peak boost.
  • Simultaneous boost and attenuation: Like other Pultec EQs, the EQH-2 allows engineers to boost and cut the same frequency range simultaneously. This "Pultec trick" is achieved through the interaction of the separate boost and attenuate controls, creating unique tonal curves.
  • Continuously variable controls: All boost and attenuate controls are continuously variable, enabling smooth adjustments without noise or steps in level.
  • In-out key: A key switch allows for A/B testing of the equalized and unequalized signal without clicks or level changes.
