The Oktava MK-012-01 mic is the most recognizable and well-regarded model in the Oktava lineup. It is a compact, high quality, small diaphragm microphone featuring a hypercardioid capsule. The MK-012-01 (hypercardioid) offers a smooth response with a slightly enhanced detail in the upper mid, which provides an accurate and musical character for all sound sources. The small size of the microphone provides easy positioning, even in tight spaces. Designed to be modular, you can easily swap out the capsule and pad, making this mic a versatile powerhouse in the recording studio. The included -10 dB pad is ideal for high SPL environments, making the MK-012 perfect for drum overheads, snare drum, hand percussion, guitar cab, and more. What We Think
The Oktava MK-012 has been a go-to mic for a number of audio applications for me, for around 20 years now. Whether it be acoustic guitar and stringed instruments, drum room and overheads (thanks to it's great transient response), or even dialogue, the MK-012 is a reliable tool for the job. Their detail, off-axis rejection (cardioid and hyper-cardioid capsules), as well as tunable proximity effect – coupled with the different kit configurations, makes the MK-012 a highly versatile small diaphragm condenser.
The Hyper-Cardioid capsules have a tighter more laser focused pick-up giving a slight increase in upper mid frequencies. This makes them perfect for applications in noisy environments – which is why the hyper-cardioid capsules are so often used for dialogue in ENG and film. The hyper-cardioid capsule really lets you hone in on the sound source, while rejecting surrounding noise. Couple that with the nonreflective black finish, and you have a mic that is invisible when on the broadcast or film stage.
