The Manley Stereo Variable MU Mastering Compressor brings the smooth, musical character of the legendary Variable Mu into a precision-controlled design created specifically for mastering. Its all-tube, transformer-coupled signal path provides natural, cohesive gain reduction that can gently enhance a finished mix or provide more assertive dynamic control while preserving clarity, impact, and musicality.
Unlike the standard Variable Mu, the Mastering version features precision-stepped Input, Output, Threshold, and Attack controls for accurate settings and easy recall between sessions and revisions. The current HP-TBAR configuration combines a High-Pass Side Chain filter to reduce unwanted low-frequency-triggered compression with Manley’s T-Bar tube design for smooth, controlled gain reduction. Compress and Limit modes provide a useful range from subtle mastering compression to stronger peak control, while the unit’s high-headroom design makes it well suited for critical stereo mastering applications.

The Legend Continues
Apr 25th 2022This thing has lived in some of the top studios around the world for 4 decades. You've heard it on countless hit records and it continues to deliver that smooth, bear-hugging compression that glues a mix together in a musical way that other Vari-Mu comps just can't do. It can be transparent or inject that famous "Manley distortion" that brings life and punch to a mix. It's my favorite Mu compressor and it's hard to get a bad sound out of this thing. The mastering version makes it quick and easy to recall settings from session to session and is an indispensable tool in my rig.
