The Future of Monitoring in the Hedd Type 20 Mk2
Mar 2nd 2021I had originally intended to purchase the original Type 20's and just one day after pulling the trigger for them on Front End Audio, Hedd announced the soon to arrive Mk2's. I called Front End right away, and they were kind of enough to switch my order over to the new models. I had to wait a few months for the monitors to arrive, but boy was it worth it. The Type 20's are truly something special. They are unlike many other monitors I have heard, featuring a level of dimensionality and surrealness that is truly difficult to describe. In a well treated room, you will hardly notice the speakers are what is making the sound: they completely disappear. What you are left with is a "aura" or bubble of precisely imaged, flat, and incredible accurate sonic bliss. This has only improved as the monitors have broken in over the first week of use, and as my ears adjust. In terms of frequency performance, the treble is absolutely bang on. The level of detail and clarity is truly superb. Mid range is buttery and smooth, with excellent imaging. Bass is full, and features dynamics that of speakers much larger than this. They have that sense of power and weight akin to a live sound system, yet with incredible accuracy. The amount of bass is certainly impressive, and for what it's worth, I shelved mine about -2db via the controls on the back to adjust to my room. Beyond the fantastic sound signature of these monitors, you also get a suite of controls to play around with and tune them to your liking. I have greatly enjoyed switching between ported, closed, linerized, extended range, and even high passed with a subwoofer. The flexibility is incredible, and super fun if you like to optimize speakers to your taste. My only minor, and i must stress minor, gripe with these speakers is that they don't get quite as loud as I had hoped. I think this has something to do with the fact that they play true down to 25hz in my testing (out of a 7 inch driver!). I also produce primarily bass heavy electronic music, which dramatically reduces the headroom of any speaker. That being said, they get as loud as you could realistically want, but in those rare occasions where you want to really open them up, they fall off sooner than expected. That is especially true in closed mode. In ported mode however, they get as loud as any other monitor I have used. If I use the highpass and run them with my subs, then they can get massively loud. To summarize, buy these monitors. They are fantastic. Front End Audio's customer service is fantastic. If you have crazy SPL needs and produce bass heavy music like I do, I would look at the Type 30's or simply run these with a sub. At the end of the day, no matter what music you produce or mix, you won't be disappointed with these. They should be the last monitors you ever need to buy. Even just listening to music and relaxing, these are massively pleasing, unique, and smooth speakers.
