Best value in valve mic preamps with one big caveat
Jan 22nd 2026On a cost per channel and sound quality basis there’s nothing that can touch this. It sounds fantastic, open, clean, and larger than life. The headphone output is a cleaver addition for listening for the sweet spot where the saturation and compression come on. The only issue is that it’ll arrive with no paperwork from HCL, no warranty registration, no manual…nothing, and when you reach out to HCL you’ll get no response. That means you’d better be a good tube amp tech when the time comes because HCL will be impossible to reach for support.
