The Electric & Company EC3 Preamp is the deluxe production version of the classic Ampex 351 amplifier circuit- with added features, of course. Loads of color without apology!

The EC3 Preamp is most colored amplifier Electric & Company makes which delivers 70dB of gain through its DC coupled push/pull output stage. The Electric & Company EC3 features 12AX7 and 12AU7 tubes, Jensen input and Cinemag output transformers, Hoyt moving coil VU Meter, classic Davies (Dakaware) phenolic knobs, boutique film/foil polypropylene capacitors, mil-spec precision film and classic carbon composition resistors and PEC2W carbon pots. This host of  features makes the EC2 a must have for the modern recordist.

The Electric & Company EC3 is one of those preamps that immediately delivers that tube sound you have in your head before you even plug in a mic. While using it in the studio, the first thing we noticed was how smooth, full, and dimensional everything felt coming back through the monitors. There’s a richness to it that’s unmistakably tube, but it never feels soft or blurry — just big, musical, and inviting. One of our favorite quirks of the EC3 is the phase switch, which does something genuinely useful beyond its usual job. Flip it, and the tone shifts warmer, almost like engaging a subtle tone switch — and yes, it sounds great. Add in the output attenuation and suddenly you’ve got a lot of control over how hard you want to drive the input. While tracking, we loved being able to push it for a little grit and attitude, or keep things clean and rounded when the song called for it. Inspired by the classic Ampex 351 designs but very much its own thing, the EC3 is a character-rich preamp that’s a joy to use and easy to fall in love with.
