The Beyerdynamic M88 Dynamic Microphone is a classic vocal and instrument microphone which has found fame on many voices as well as being a go-to for kick drum and more.

Some products are born classics and the M88 has to take centre-stage for being far ahead of its time when it was first introduced in the 1960`s. Incorporating a new low-mass diaphragm element, the M88 has earned its place in history in the Kick Drum. Sound engineers have found that the lightning-fast transient response of the microphone reproduces the complex sound patterns of this instrument resulting in the tight `thump` without the need for complex signal processing. This characteristic works equally well on other instruments especially where intricate low frequencies and their harmonics need to be captured. The M88 is one of the most frequently specified microphones by sound engineers worldwide and heralded a beyerdynamic contemporary classic as this microphone becomes renown for capturing emotive audio signals.

The M88 offers both a wide frequency response and rugged construction making an ideal combination for many applications. In the studio and live use its high SPL capability allows the microphone to be placed close to loud sound sources such as kick drum and bass guitar. It is also equally impressive as a vocal microphone or for brass and woodwind instruments.

    Beyer vocal mic
    Joel Lager

I instantly liked this microphone from the moment I plugged it in. The gain and clarity was obvious before even singing into it. After trying several other mic's in a shootout, I found that I actually sing better with this mic. Very clear, and warm sounding throughout. It does have some hand handling noise, and there were some occasionally plosive pop's, but no worse than any other mic I've tried. It sounded pretty consistent on different genres of music; Rock, Pop, R&B, Blues. I had a singer friend of mine come listen for a second opinion, took her about 5 min. to choose this mic. I tracked some vocals in Pro Tools with the M88 and found it to sound very similar to my Shure SM7B, and was able to comp the takes into one track... pretty nice. I found it sounds pretty good on a guitar cabinet as well. Highly recommended!

    Beyer M88 Dynamic Microphone
    Richard OIrdoubegian

This microphone sounds great just plugged in a console w/no EQ! Its very linear and doesn't require much tweaking to sound good. I haven't put this mic to the test much, but sounds great on vocals and will be trying it on guitar and kick. Thanks again Alan for your great customer support!

    The German Experience

Oh, so this is what it's like to own a nice German mic. You get a beautiful, solid brass lump of a microphone, with a frequency response plot for your own individual item. ayou also get a clip and padded bag. The mic is warm at thte bottom end, but not wooly. The top-end is lovely and "smooth" (now I understand what they mean by 'Chinese crispiness in the top-end). The mic's response is a little scooped-out around 500-1000Hz from memory and this is reported as being good for nasal vocals. However this seems to be a mic that is useful for many, many more things. Vocal and instrument. Studio and live (the latter owing to the hypercardioid response and high gain before feedback). Considering the street price, this would have to be one of the best-value microphones I know of.

    great dynamic
    DW

Front End Audio has a fantastic price on this mic. For those without the budget for a fancy tube LDC or Neumann, this can make a really great vocal microphone in the same league, but differently tonal, than the SM7 or RE20. The M88 is bold bright and super smooth sounding, yes almost condenser like. It also is one of my favorite mics for bass guitar amplifiers. It excells in close drum miking applications as well

    Great all rounder!
    Andrew Kajtar

This is a great all round mic! I settled on it after reading many reviews and deciding it was the one I needed for my small collection. I needed a mic to record my kick drum and this was the one that got a lot of good reviews for kicks. Also used it on my bass cab and guitar amp. Anything really, where you want to bring out the deeper tones while slightly attenuating and "sweetening" the highs. The clincher was that is also an excellent vocal mic if you want to bring out the deeper, resonant timbre in your voice - especially if your voice range is in the mid / higher register, like mine. I used it live for that application recently and was more than pleased with the results - so was the audience. Well, there you go - I'm all about 'bang for buck', and the M88 has certainly been that for me! Cheers!

    Great kick drum mic!
    el igloo

My first recordings as a kid were with my dad's old M88. Little did I know it was a kick mic staple, however I did use it for this application, and thought I was a promising engineer, lol... Never sucks! It's a versatile, nice mic to have around. Great for vocals, captures character and grit. I use it on guitar cabs alongside a 57 and it brings out more low mids and weight to the sound.

What We Think

The Beyerdynamic M88... What a classic! Just hold it in your hand. It's surprising that it somehow weighs less than a pound. You could seriously kill a marmot with a good whack of the M88. But sonically - when it comes to the M88, it's pretty much this simple - you just have to have one in your mic locker. The M88is a proven performer for vocals, kick drums (legendary), horns, bass amps, and various other instruments in the studio and on the stage. It's arguably the nicest dynamic mic that you will ever own and the sound is simply worth the coin.
