The Warm Audio WA-73 is modeled after the classic 73-Style Preamp, which without a doubt defined the tone of rock/pop music for decades. These classic preamps have been use in every studio around the world as the tonal center piece of countless hits. With the 73-Style preamp so highly desired by engineers and studios, Warm Audio saw the need for a high quality replication. However, the Warm Audio WA-73 is not just another clone. Years of research, reverse engineering, meticulous design, and component sourcing was put into the WA-73 before Warm Audio was satisfied, that they had created the best 73 style preamp in the market. After putting the WA73 through the paces in the studio, the folks here at Front End Audio have to agree.

The WA-73 is excellent sounding all on types of microphones and sound sources- along with that most important tone that we have all heard over and over again on the music we listed too. The WA-73 is the most authentic reproduction made today and every component from the custom Carhnhill Transformers to the Capacitors and Output Transistors are identical to the original. On top of that, every unit is hand wired and assembled ensuring that all quality and performance standards have been met. There is no reason why this preamp, or a pair, should not be in your studio.

    wish i would of got the one with the EQ but its all good. this preamp sounds nice for the money you can not beat it .

The Warm Audio WA73 definitely made believers out of us the first time we patched it in. We’ll admit it — when we first heard about it, there was a moment of “okay, here comes another take on a classic.” Then we actually used it. That skepticism disappeared fast. While tracking acoustic guitar through the WA73, the warmth and fullness immediately stood out, beautifully accentuating the wood and body of the instrument without ever getting boxy. There was still plenty of air and detail on top, which made performances feel natural and alive instead of overly thick or blurred. As sessions went on, the WA73 kept proving itself across a wide range of sources. On vocals, it delivered that rich, forward tone that sits exactly where you want it in a mix, and on stringed instruments — from acoustic guitars to mandolin, banjo, and even mountain dulcimer — it consistently sounded musical and balanced. And when we wanted to lean into things a bit more, engaging the Tone switch and pushing the saturation brought out a gritty, energized character that made electric guitars jump out of the speakers in the best way possible (pedals started feeling a little nervous). All told, the WA73 has that classic rock-rooted sound we all know and love, but with enough versatility to avoid being boxed into one role. It’s a preamp we genuinely enjoy using, and one that earned its spot on our short list without trying too hard.
