The Telefunken Elektroakustik M81 Dynamic Microphone has been designed with the goal to not only complement the M80, TELEFUNKEN Elektroakustik's first dynamic offering, but to also stand out in a universe filled with dynamic microphone options. When the Telefunken Electroakustik M80 was first introduced in 2008, it quickly became a favorite in both live and studio environments. Its clear and detailed top end, articulate mid-range, and minimal proximity effect won the hearts (and ears) of thousands of new users.

Sonic Characteristic
Building off many of the strengths of the M80, the TELEFUNKEN M81 retains the same minimal proximity effect, superior feedback rejection, and articulate mid-range. However, with the Telefunken Elektroakustik M81, the top end is pulled back a bit, yielding a flatter overall frequency response. This combination results in a microphone with a wealth of body and clarity, making it a great tool for taming brighter vocals and guitar tones and for fattening up percussion, horns and thinner sounding sources.

Circuit Design
The TELEFUNKEN Elektroakustik M81's tailored frequency response makes the microphone exceptional on electric guitars, percussion, rack and floor toms, and brass instruments. This microphone's wide range of uses and rugged reliability make it the workhorse for the new generation.

Construction
Finished in the same flint gray body tube and tri-chrome head grill styling as the R-F-T AR-51, the Telefunken Elektroakustik M81 is readily identifiable when reaching for the microphone. The Telefunken Elektroakustik M81 was very much designed with the AR-51 in mind. Great care was taken to tune the Telefunken Elektroakustik M81's overall response to be complimentary to the AR-51 when recording electric guitars.

    It is my practice mic

    while not fantastic it is well priced and also works well as a reference i use it to practice singing to see if i was on key. I would suggest it on snare and possibly guitar.

    I compared this with 2 different 57s on heavy electric guitar, it blew away one and was neck & neck with the other but had a very different quality. The sound is very open, smooth and linear in comparison to the 57, while the 57 has more bottom thud from proximity effect. If you're finding your 57 is muddying your tracks then this should be your new mic.

The Telefunken M81 can be summed up in one word: beefy. While using it in the studio, it quickly showed that this mic is all about weight and authority. Compared to its brighter sibling, the M80, the M81 has a darker top end and a really nice bloom in the mids, giving it a punchy, full-bodied sound that feels big without being messy. That voicing makes the M81 a great choice for vocalists with sibilance issues, where you want control without losing presence. It’s also rich and smoky on guitar cabinets — especially lead parts — and an absolute killer on rack toms when you want them to hit hard and sound massive. If your toms need to thunder instead of politely knock, this mic delivers. Add in the option of the shorty version for tighter placements, and you’ve got a dynamic mic that deserves a spot on any serious short list. Telefunken nailed this one — the M81 is a clear winner.
