Crimson Audio Yellow SM57/SM58 Modification Options

Front End Audio has made it easy to build the modification handle of your choice. However if you have any question please reach out to us and we will be happy to assit you in deciding what options best fit your needs.

  • Select Your Cartridge: Add either an SM57 or SM58 cartridge (with our without grill) to your handle. Many times we find customers will have a extra SM57 or SM58 laying around their studio that they dont mind using for this modification. If this your situation, then there is no need to add a cartidge. Howerver, if you dont want to canabilize one of your existing microphones then this is your solution.
  • Add a Granelli Audio Labs Handle: The Granelli Handle option is a 90 degree elbow that works seamlessly with the Crimson modification. It gives your mic a 90 degree angle to help improve your mic-placement options on drums, guitar amps and bass cabinets. This is a super cool addition which adds versatility to your microphone.
  • Modification: This unique modification is not only affordable, but easy to do yourself. It only takes a couple minutes with some very basic soldering skills. However, if you want to skip the extra work or don't have the tools, then we are happy to do the modification for you. When Front End Audio does the modification we will QC all parts, assemble the microphone, QC the finished microphone, secure it in its own zippered mic bag*, and get it on the way to you typically within 1-2 business days - so you are ready to go right out of the box!

*Zipper mic bag is included for free only when Front End Audio does the modification.

The Best SM57 Mod Out There!
    Vahe Manoukian

The Crimson Audio Yellow Mod is my favorite to use on guitar amps. The Yellow mod sounds like an SM57 on steroids. If you have busy song arrangements then this mic is perfect because the upper mid push helps your instruments like snare and guitars cut through the mix. A wonderful and easy mod!

    Nice 57 mod
    Gerry Diwa

These Crimson Audio 57 mods are a no brainer! Cheap and quick and voila a new dimension on the 57 mic. This yellow modded 57 has been permanently assigned to the Marshall 1960 guitar cabinet coz the mids are so nice and smooth and the bottom has a bot of bloom, too! Thanks to FEA for making this mod available to the masses.

    Excellent upgrade!
    Brian Bartleson

Fuller sounding than my stock 58. Sweet sparkly highs and a deeper low-end. Anxious to try the white mod on the 57 I use for snare!

This is what I always wanted a 57 to sound like
    Peter P

I’ve never been a big 57 fan. They’re fine for certain things and handy to have in an emergency, but I’ve never understood the love that some people have for them. The Yellow flips the script. Smooth and mighty with just the right amount of bite. It’s probably going to live in front of my Vibro-Champ for the foreseeable future, but I’m looking forward to trying it on other sources. This...THIS...is the guitar sound I had in my head. I bought the separate handle/head version and it took about 1 minute to solder. Highly recommended.

    Mic Mod Review

Fantastic! A great idea that really beefs up the sound. It helps the instruments jump out of the mix more. I would certainly purchase another one of these. Great!

    Well worth it!
    Michael D Levine

The yellow mod is wonderful! It adds a level of fidelity I did not expect to hear. So much so that I recorded a voiceover with it. On a snare drum, pure magic. The airiness of the top end gives such a polished and complete tone. I love it!

    AB tests inconclusive
    Matt Parmenter

Easy install! I set the new Crimson up against another stock SM57 placed as identically as possible on snare, then on guitar speakers, running through a matched pair of Manley preamps with the levels set identically. SSL Alphalink conversion into a Trident 8T console monitor section sending to Adam A5x/Sub8, Focal Alpha65 and Avantone mixcubes. Cycling through monitors and switching tracks in a blind test, I couldn't hear a noticeable difference on any source. To be fair, I haven't spent enough time with it to determine if there's some subtle difference I'm missing. I track a lot of rock and pop, and usually blend a ribbon and a 57 or a vintage Sennheiser on guitars, and a 57 or 421 with a BeyerDynamic condenser on snares. I don't think the upgrade will make any discernible difference in a mix. It was an interesting experiment, but not one that I would spend the money to repeat.

What We Think

The Crimson Audio Transformers Yellow is a serious hot rod mod for the 57 & 58. I found it a pleasure to be part of the testing of the prototype, and it exceeded my expectations. I'm not really a mod guy, but if it makes a significant difference, then I am willing to try it. The Yellow is impressive. It is like a whole new mic. The hotter output adds energy and power, there is a deeper low end, smooth and balanced mids, and an open top end that adds clarity to the mic. Yet, the mod tames the bite. No more hairiness, and no more honk. This is almost like turning your 57 & 58 into a great condenser mic, but with the smoothness of a dynamic.
