Crimson Audio Yellow.SM

A tuned premium quality transformer mod for your Shure SM57/SM58, already mounted in a replacement handle.

We all know, own, and love the SM57 and SM58. From home studios to professional studios, the SM57 and SM58 have been "go to" mics for guitar cabs, snare drums, and more. But, sometimes we find ourselves wanting maybe a little more from these loved mics. Maybe a little more richness, a little more depth, or a little more air. Sometimes we want a little less, like a little less mid honk. Well enter Crimson Audio Transformers. Crimson Audio (along with the help of Front End Audio), has designed two great transformers (pre loaded in replacement handles) to evolve you SM57 and SM58!

The Crimson Audio Transformers Yellow is a true hot rod mod for the SM57 and SM58. It gives a deeper low end, smooth balanced mids, and an open airy and clear top end. Furthermore it provides a much hotter output, giving a forwardness and real energy to the tracks. If you want powerful guitars, strong and cutting snare, or detailed hi-hats, this is the SM57 and SM58 mod for you. The Crimson Audio Transformers Yellow will make you fall in love all over again. It's like N2O for your SM57 and SM58.

This unique mod is not only affordable, but easy to do yourself. It only takes a couple mins, and some very basic soldering skills. We should also mention, that yes! - it is compatible with the Granelli GS5790 as well!

Crimson Audio Yellow.SM Features

  • Custom Transformer, Preloaded in replacement handle
  • Multi-filar windings
  • Ten sections of interleaving
  • Provides:
    • Pronounced mid and upper mid response (without being harsh)
    • Brings the material forward in a mix
  • Wires are color coded same as the SM57/SM58

What We Think

The Crimson Audio Transformers Yellow is a serious hot rod mod for the 57 & 58. I found it a pleasure to be part of the testing of the prototype, and it exceeded my expectations. I'm not really a mod guy, but if it makes a significant difference, then I am willing to try it. The Yellow is impressive. It is like a whole new mic. The hotter output adds energy and power, there is a deeper low end, smooth and balanced mids, and an open top end that adds clarity to the mic. Yet, the mod tames the bite. No more hairiness, and no more honk. This is almost like turning your 57 & 58 into a great condenser mic, but with the smoothness of a dynamic.

Well worth it! July 26, 2016

The yellow mod is wonderful! It adds a level of fidelity I did not expect to hear. So much so that I recorded a voiceover with it. On a snare drum, pure magic. The airiness of the top end gives such a polished and complete tone. I love it!

AB tests inconclusive June 6, 2016

Easy install! I set the new Crimson up against another stock SM57 placed as identically as possible on snare, then on guitar speakers, running through a matched pair of Manley preamps with the levels set identically. SSL Alphalink conversion into a Trident 8T console monitor section sending to Adam A5x/Sub8, Focal Alpha65 and Avantone mixcubes. Cycling through monitors and switching tracks in a blind test, I couldn't hear a noticeable difference on any source. To be fair, I haven't spent enough time with it to determine if there's some subtle difference I'm missing. I track a lot of rock and pop, and usually blend a ribbon and a 57 or a vintage Sennheiser on guitars, and a 57 or 421 with a BeyerDynamic condenser on snares. I don't think the upgrade will make any discernible difference in a mix. It was an interesting experiment, but not one that I would spend the money to repeat.

I haven't had an opportunity to try this bad boy out yet, but I like how you guys roll. Packaging was well done, promptly shipped with a little hand written note, too! I'll return once I've had some ears on this Yellow thang.

Best thing in 15 years!!! February 5, 2016

Never have I ever had such an overnight improvement and electricity come to the studio as I had once I received my 57 with the yellow mod and paired it with the "Mogaine." Absolutely speechless. Under $300 and I had an unstoppable chain. Actually used the combo on vocals for a session--and the 57 was chosen over high-end $2000+ mics. Get this, then get the Mogaine...and get ready to start REALLY making it happen in the studio. Stupendous on guitar amps. Quite simply...perfect.

Added Punch January 11, 2016
Reviewer: Thomas Allen from West Sayville, NY United States
This mod was very easy to do and well worth the money. I'm not much of a solderer and you really don't have to be. I use the SM57 on my snare drum which I've always liked. This mod has added more punch to my recordings with a nice even tone, not blaring but what you hope to get from your snare.
