Crimson Audio Orange SM57/SM58 Modification

A premium quality tuned transformer mod for your SM57/SM58, already mounted in a replacement handle.

We all know, own, and love the SM57 and SM58. From the studio to the stage, the SM57 and SM58 have been "go to" mics for guitar cabs, snare drums, vocals, and more. But, sometimes we find ourselves wanting maybe a little more from these loved mics. Maybe a little more richness, a little more depth, or a little more air. Sometimes we want a little less, like a little less mid honk. “Enters Crimson Audio Transformers”. Crimson Audio (along with the help of Front End Audio), has designed two great transformer mods (pre loaded in replacement handles) to evolve your SM57 and SM58!

The Crimson Audio Transformers Orange.SM provides a rich and subtle enhancement, to give your SM57 and SM58 a more ribbon like sound. A deeper low end, smooth rich mids, and a soft yet airy top end, all rounded of with just a touch more output - the Orange transformer sings on guitar cabs, and adds meat to a snare. It also performs very well on kick drums, spot micing on hats, and on vocals. Pair your Orange 57 with a Crimson Audio Transformers Mogaine, and experience the 57 like you never thought possible! The Crimson Audio Transformers Orange will make you fall in love all over again.

We offer a variety of ways to get into this mod. If you have a 57 or 58, just buy the handle and install the mod (you can view our install tutorial video on the "video Clips" tab above). Want that cool Granelli 90 degree mod for snare (or guitar cab/etc)? Well thanks to the partnership with Front End Audio and Granelli Audio Labs, you can add just the conversion kit (elbow and wires only – and only available as an option to the mods), converting your mod to a hotrodded G5790! Or maybe you want to keep your 57/58, and just get a new modded one. Well, you can! Get the mod you want, the cartridge you want (57 or 58), add a Granelli conversion kit (or not), and built the mic yourself. Don't want to (or don't know how to) do the mod? Let us do it. Whether you are building a modded 57/58 from scratch, or you want to send in your 57/58, FEA can assemble and QC the mod for you!

Got questions? Let us know. We will get you taken care of, so you can enjoy the mod and focus on the music!

Crimson Orange mod for sm 57 February 13, 2017
Reviewer: Aaron from United States
This still sounds like a 57(which is good, because you want that when you reach for a 57) but it sounds like a BETTER 57.  Lows reach a tad further, highs a bit further - mids a little more easy on the ears.  More open.  Can't wait to try the Yellow and White!

57 Mod July 19, 2016
Reviewer: B Morris
I just had to see for myself how it sounded, how many uses it could have with the mod, wow! It is said, "if it ain't broke don't fix it". It's not that it was broken, it just does so many more things very well with this mod. I'll have to try the Yellow as well.

Promising but flaw in manufacturing March 9, 2016
Reviewer: James Hewitt from Grand Junction, CO United States
I purchased the orange transformer handle replacement for the SM57.  It was easy to re-solder the connections, however when attempting to screw the new handle in place, I could not get it to thread correctly. It appeared that the threads were  damaged. After contacting Crimson they are sending a replacement, no charge, and even a free T-Shirt. Great customer service. Looking forward to getting it and comparing with another of my 57's. I will update my review after getting the replacement.

The Crimson SM57 Orange mod is fantastic! March 2, 2016
Reviewer: Brian David Willis from Brentwood, TN United States
I liked it so much I ordered a second one within hours of having heard my first purchase!  In A / B testing on a snare drum it was the preferred mic over a stock 57, a Beyer 201 & a Crown CM-700 (recorded two-at-a-time through vintage Daking 52270 preamps).  Then it beat out a stock SM57 on a '52 Tele / Dr. Z prototype amp (recorded through a vintage Neve 1073 preamp).  The SM57 Orange has a smoother low-end that extends to lower frequencies than the stock model;  a very bold, clear midrange;  and a flatter top-end, without the stock 57's presence peak.  Overall it simply sounds more natural, more like the instruments actually sound in the room.  As an engineer buddy of mine put it, it sounds like what he'd want to EQ the stock mic to sound like…..  but without having to engage any EQ!  All that said, I still need to have stock SM57's around for when they're the best fit, but the Orange mod is an amazing alternative voice to this classic mic at a REALLY reasonable price!
