What We Think

The Rode NTR Ribbon Microphone shows up on the scene with Rode's famous consistency and build quality. The active circuit topology makes for a sound is well defined and musical. The NTR is great for overheads. In fact, I recently attended a master class with Alan Parsons (Pink Floyd, The Alan Parsons Project... do we really have to detail who Alan Parsons is?), and he uses a pair of NTRs made for him. The sound when compared to a pair of Coles 4038 was more defined, but still warm and lovely. To the credit of the Coles, it sort of wasn't a fair fight considering they are passive mics and the cable run back to the SSL board preamps was probably 40-50 feet at least. So, the impedance change is going to make them even darker than they normally are... which is pretty dark. Regardless, the Rode NTR takes a lot of the variables out of the process. They're really a stellar value and work really well in a number of situations.
