The Avenson Audio Mid-Side Stereo Processor tears down the performance / price barrier which has plagued smaller working studios, delivering a great sounding and affordable solution for converting from Left-Right Stereo to Mid-Side to be processed by compression and eq, and back again.

The Avenson Audio Mid-Side Stereo Processor takes your stereo Left-Right signal and converts it via a sum and difference matrix to allow you to process the Mid and Side signals separately.

Then a second matrix converts it back to Left and Right as well as giving you a width control and a sallen-key 12db/octave high pass filter for the Side signal.

All the Input and Outputs are balanced on 0.25" TRS connectors. The MS outs normal to the MS inputs to allow you to use just the width and Side High Pass filter.

Housed in an attractive half rack width enclosure with an optional stainless steel rack shelf, the MidSide is ready to add more processing power to your racks.

Both the Avenson Audio Mid-Side and the Avenson Audio Blend are designed to be transparent tools to compliment your analog outboard gear. Short, clean signal paths keep the signals true to the source while expanding the versatility in processing.

Avenson Audio Mid-Side Stereo Processor Features

  • Allows you to access a Center Mid channel independently of the Side channel(s) derived from standard Left and Right Channels. Equalize and compress the Mid differently than the Side channel for better clarity and impact.
  • Width adjustment changes the balance of Mid to Side volumes against one another
  • Side High Pass filter (18Hz - 300Hz) and switch allow you to trim the ultra-low frequency content from the Side channel, thereby strengthening the impact of the Mid channel for a strong center image.
  • 2 x Balanced 1/4" TRS connectors each for L/R and M/S Encode
  • 2 x Balanced 1/4" TRS connectors each for L/R and M/S Decode

    Great sound!
    Marcelo Navia

Sound very clean, does what it needs to do. However, it lacks neatness of finish and presentation. I would like to have a monitoring option for the Mid and Side separately.

What We Think

avatar

We discovered the power of processing mixes via Mid-Side few years ago. This method really allows you to focus on specific 'lanes' of the music in ways that even processing individual elements before the L/R can't allow. This range of control why most truly professional mastering engineers will end up working in M/S. While there are a few M/S processors available from software makers (and they are pretty good), there is something special and very real about converting from L/R to M/S in the analog domain. Some advice when considering the Mid-Side: Remember that you're going to need to access the inputs and outputs of BOTH the Encode Matrix and the Decode Matrix. So, there are EIGHT 1/4-inch TRS patch points for the round-trip operation. We strongly recommend integrating this unit into a patchbay of some sort. We carry a variety of patchbays and all of the cabling that you'll need to successfully integrate your equipment. Brad Avenson makes some of our favorite and truly fantastic sounding tools for the studio. His commitment to making extremely high quality and proven gear that doesn't cost loads and loads of money has earned him loads of respect in the world of pro-audio. We are  thrilled that Brad has taken on the world of M/S with the Avenson Audio Mid-Side and we can't wait for others to find out what this piece can do for their work.
