AEA N22 Ribbon Microphone

AEA N22 NUVO Ribbon Microphone, bridging the gap between vintage and modern, ribbon and condenser, studio and live, the N22 is the perfect companion for musicians and engineers alike.

AEA N22 Ribbon Microphone Details

The AEA N22 Ribbon Microphone was designed with the singer-songwriter musician in mind. Artists work hard at honing their musical craft for many years, and they have probably spent a considerable sum of money on their instrument. They feel strongly about their personal tone, which they have developed over many hours of practice, so they are willing to invest into a microphone that translates their tone in recording. Nonetheless, they can"?t and don"?t want to invest into a giant mic locker, but rather need to fulfill all their recording needs with just a few pieces of gear. The new AEA N22 delivers on exactly those key points "" providing a great ribbon tone without the need for EQ in most applications, flexibility, and ease of use in home recording setups. Most importantly, the N22 was designed by listening first, and measuring only after experienced musicians and engineers told us the microphone sounded great. At $899 street price it doesn"?t break the bank, but delivers a handcrafted, US-made microphone that was built to last throughout a musician"?s career. Bridging the gap between vintage and modern, ribbon and condenser, studio and live, the N22 is the perfect companion for musicians and engineers alike.

Featuring the same Big RibbonTM technology that has earned AEA its reputation, the N22 offers an incredible sound in close-mic applications like acoustic and electric guitars, vocals, and drums. With phantom-powered JFET electronics and a custom German transformer the N22 achieves optimal performance with a wide range of preamps including USB or Firewire audio interfaces in home studio setups. The highly protected pure aluminum ribbon allows for using the N22 in live sound applications and vocal recording without the need for an additional pop-filter.

The AEA NUVO Series is a range of modern microphones that are rooted in the RCA tradition just like other AEA ribbon microphones, but have been designed to offer a fresh approach of the ribbon transducer focusing on current application demands. The NUVO series represents Wes Dooley"?s take on the evolution of the ribbon microphone. All NUVO microphones are designed with the needs of specific applications in mind.

AEA N22 Ribbon Microphone Features

  • Specifically designed for singer-songwriters, muscians and home studios
  • Bridging the gap between the top end clarity of a condenser and the classic tone of a ribbon.
  • Increased upper-midrange to make instruments cut through in a busy mix and to bring out critical sound characteristics of voices and stringed instruments without the need for EQ.
  • Reduced proximity effect to allow extreme up-close miking without boominess.
  • Highly protected ribbon to allow close-up miking without pop-filters, and wind protection live sound use.
  • Phantom-powered design for optimal performance with a wide range of preamps.
  • Uses the same 2.35" long Big Ribbon that AEA microphones have built a reputation on, continuing the RCA legacy. The same Big Ribbon technology as the AEA R44 and R84 microphones.
  • Sturdy design that is easy to use and that works with third-party clamp mounts.
  • New custom, German made transformer with exceptional bandwidth, distortion, and consistency performance.
  • Smaller form factor that is easier to use with lightweight stands and in tight miking situations
  • Uncolored, well-behaved Figure-of-8 pattern.
  • 100% handcrafted in Pasadena, CA

AEA N22 Ribbon Microphone Applications

  • Acoustic guitars (6/12-string, banjo, etc.)
    • Well-defined tone without the need for EQ
    • No excessive bass build-up at close proximity like with classic ribbon mics
    • Figure-of-8 pattern works exceptionally well in singer-songwriter applications with live guitar and live vocal performed at the same time.
  • Vocals
    • Cut through in a busy mix without getting edgy thanks to low-tuned ribbon.
    • Great wind protection allows vocal recording without pop filter.
    • Reduced proximity effect allows close-up use without excessive bass.
  • Electric guitars
    • Exceptional tone right off the bat without any low-mid build-up even when used right up on the grill of a guitar cab.
    • Highly protected ribbon allows very SPL levels.
  • Drums
    • Modern tone combining the classic low-mid qualities of a ribbon with great upper mid definition.
    • Well balanced for snare drums, toms, hi-hat, and small percussion.
    • Figure-of-8 pattern offers exceptional bleed rejection in many applications.
  • Live Sound
    • Sturdy construction and highly protected ribbon that can take a beating.
    • Phantom-powered buffer drives long mic lines and gives consistent sound.
    • Small footprint makes it easy to position the mic and allows placement in tight setups.

What We Think

"The AEA N22 Nuvo addresses exactly what home recordists have wanted for years when searching for a ribbon microphone: warm body (without too much woof) and a smooth yet still clear top-end. The AEA N22 may very well be regarded as a revolutionary reinvention of the ribbon microphone - and I feel that would be an appropriate assessment. There's really no feeling of need to equalize this mic or even that crazy feeling of need to buy a specific preamp - though AEA's RPQ and RPQ500 preamps are the perfect mates for this microphone as their clean, clear gain lets all of the mic's sound through without the mic having to work harder as with lower impedance preamps; it simply 'works' as soon as you plug it in. The phantom powered on-board active preamp works to remove a lot of the impedance relationship concerns present with passive ribbon mics. The bottom end is really interesting with the N22 Nuvo. It is full without being out of control. It has the perfect balance of giving the massive size that AEA's ribbons are famous for. But there's no rumble anywhere. It's as if the perfect roll-off is already applied. These low-frequency characteristics combined with the high-frequency extension makes for one of the most musician-friendly microphones I've ever encountered. But it's not a microphone that is limited in it's usefulness or to one particular group. I wouldn't hesitate to use the N22 Nuvo to record any instrument, honestly - especially if you're after bringing up a perfectly balanced lower-mid and mid-range of that instrument without compromising with adding equalization. It's all about balance and your choices of where something is supposed to sit in the mix anyways. So, the N22 Nuvo offers a slam-dunk tool for featuring a particular source without resorting to double mic'ing and the resulting phase issues. It's just a straight-up great sounding microphone that is perfect for singers, guitarists (killer on amps, too!), string players, and pretty much anything. Don't take my word for it. Try it out for yourself. You'll agree that it's the ribbon mic that you've probably been waiting for.

Great mic!!! July 3, 2014
Reviewer: Benjy Johnson from Greensboro, NC United States
Just go buy one already!!  They bill this as a project studio mic, but its used everyday in my professional studio.  The most "real" sounding mic I have heard.  No hype, no craziness, just pure sound.  Ever have a vocalist with a spiky mid-range?  This fixes them.  Go......buy.....now.
