How can AEA preserve and update that Big Ribbon sound in a more affordable package using new technologies?

The A840 uses the same big ribbon as the A440, is 5 pounds lighter, and less bulky. Due to its active JFET impedance buffer circuitry the new A840 is insensitive to lower preamp input impedances. The high output sensitivity reduces noise and allows long cable runs.This allows you to use your favorite tube preamp without compromising your classic ribbon sound. Designed for accent and solo work, its bass proximity effect is less pronounced and the upper 10 to 20 kHz octave is stronger than the A440.

Why do the AEA Big Ribbon mics sound so different when compared to other microphones?

Classic condenser diaphragms are radially stretched. They typically have sharp, narrow resonances in the 8 to 12 kHz range, the sound quality we refer to as ??tizz?. AEA Big Ribbon mics use a long rectangular diaphragm clamped only at the ends and tensioned lightly with a fundamental resonance below 20 Hz. Less than 80 millionths of an inch thick, AEA's ultra low mass transducer has extended bass, excellent transient response and few resonances. It??s one of the most sensitive and accurate transducers possible. Many have commented that AEA mics record exactly what your ear hears. Excellent headroom and low distortion allow close micing with an A840 without sounding brittle. Additionally the smooth, non-resonant high end provides engineers considerable EQ flexibility. "The folks at Front End Audio are extremely excited about this new, "Active" take on one of the most celebrated and best selling microphones here at Front End Audio - the AEA R84. For years we have recommended the R84 to customers looking for a smooth, beautiful sounding ribbon microphone. However, all ribbon microphones require special consideration when it comes to their pairings with microphone preamplifiers - if you've ever called and talked with us about ribbons, you'll know! To know why the A840 has come about takes a little background...

"Now, in our experience, the Fred Forsell designed AEA TRP and more recently, the AEA RPQ, was always the best performing choice to pair up with the ribbon microphone design. The result is a cleaner, clearer sound that exhibits more linearity in frequency response and a better overall musicality. Other manufacturers had sought to rectify the ribbon mic impedence matching issue by adding an active preamp to the mic body. However, though many of their ribbon elements exhibited decent sounding reproduction characteristics, their internal preamps were designs that were just too noisy to be considered a 'serious' microphone for discriminating professionals.

"Due to the needs of scoring engineers in LA, AEA again teamed with Fred Forsell to design the A440 which now gives film scores excellent, full bodied recordings of orchestral music with very quiet passages. Now that incredibly demanding music can be recorded without requiring additional preamps having to be delivered and setup in advance of sessions for use with AEA R44s or perhaps even original RCA 44s (that have most likely been serviced at AEA by Wes Dooley himself!).

"The AEA A440 opened up new doors of sonic possibility for users who had some wonderful preamps that, due to incompatible impedances, could never really sound good with a passive ribbon microphone. The new AEA active electronics make it possible for these mics to work off of phantom power like a condenser microphone, and now pair with any microphone preamplifier the recording engineer so chooses - tube or solid state, LaChapell or Mackie! - Just so long as it has phantom power.

"The needs of project studio owners are such that simplicity and ease of use are paramount. Ribbon microphones have traditionally been given a bad rap when evaluated in a setting where they are misunderstood and thus, misused. "Recently, we did some tests with the RPQ preamp with the A840 and the A440. I personally found the A840 to exhibit more low-end punch for closer sources (proximity effect) though the housing construction and the magnet structure of the A440 (R44) usually combine to have more of a 'kick in the gut' effect. As a result, the A840 emerges as a first-choice microphone for vocals, stringed instruments, drums, guitar instruments, percussion, and pretty much whatever you want to put the A840 in front of. Combine it with either the RPQ (remember, the A840 requires phantom power) and you've got an unstoppable combination.
