Its ability to handle high pressure levels makes it a natural for guitars and drums, but that's just the beginning. A cardioid mic for a host of applications!

The MD 421 II is one of the best known microphones in the world. Its excellent sound qualities enable it to cope with the most diverse recording conditions and broadcasting applications.

Feedback rejection and bass roll-off

The MD 421 II's cardioid pattern offers outstanding feedback rejection, making it an excellent choice for live situations or recording environments where bleed from other instruments may be an issue. And the five selectable bass rolloff settings control proximity effect, so you can use the MD 421 II in close-miking situations and still get clean, clear response with no unnatural bass boost.

What We Think - Sennheiser MD421 II Review

"The Sennheiser MD421 II is a long recognized studio standard on drums (a favorite for toms and kick drums), guitar cabs, bass cabinets, vocals, horns, and actually, a ton of other uses. Every studio should have at least one (but more like 4 or 8 of them). The five position bass roll-off switch helps to tailor the low end of the signal and compensate for proximity effect, making the MD 421 II one of the most versatile dynamic microphones ever created. We recommend them unreservedly."

Deceptively Good May 16, 2012
Reviewer: nicholas d'angelo from torrance, CA United States
i used this microphone more than 15 years ago and since then always wanted one. finally got one and every time i use it i am pleased with what it delivers. i have two dozen mics which i use for either live or studio. this one is one of my default live mics. yes, i use it for vocals and although i usually have a problem with proximity because of the way i sing/talk, this mic is very forgiving. my live mics serve 2 purposes (pa + recording) so for me to give a mic a "default" status it has to shine in both departments simultaneously. like the Shure SM 57, everyone should have one of these in their locker.

Great for Guitars March 30, 2011
Reviewer: John Tuggle from Decatur, GA United States
I really like using this mic on guitar amps mixed with a 57.  It has mids that the 57 just doesn't have giving your a very full sound.  Toms work with this of course very well. Sounds totally different than the SM7.

great all arounder September 23, 2010
Reviewer: Anonymous Person from Columbus, Ohio
I don't have a lot of mics so what I do have has to count and this one fills a lot of niches from guitar cabs to drums. The cool thing is you can dial in the tone with the knob.

Great for toms and guitar cabs August 29, 2010
Reviewer: Jesse from Youngstown, OH United States
Once you throw one of these on a tom you'll soon realize why people have been using these for years.  It just gives you a great response and makes things sound the way they should.  Also great for a darker sounding close mic'ed guitar cab.  The mount takes some getting used to, but isn't the fatal flaw some people make it out to be.  Bass roll-off switch also comes in handy.

Not the legend I had hoped for. June 10, 2010
Reviewer: Stephen Lawson from Minneapolis, MN United States
I was not impressed with sound or build quality. The quirky mounting bracket is a sloppy fit. The plastic case is oversize and pales to some less expensive mics The mic body is plastic and does not have the same "wieght of quality" as an SM57. All this would be fine if it sounded great and it doesn't sound great... good yes, but not great.
