The Earthworks 1024 Microphone Preamp is the 4-channel version of what is arguably the most clean and pure microphone preamp ever designed. When people talk about 'straight wire with gain' they mean the Earthworks 1024 preamp!

The Earthworks 1024 Microphone Preamp is the quietest mic preamp currently available on the market! It is one of the ZDT Zero Distortion Preamplifier series based on discrete circuitry designed by David Blackmer, establishing a new standard of sonic excellence in electronics. This exacting new standard provides frequency response from 1Hz to 200kHz +0.5dB, a rise time of 0.27 microseconds and distortion of less than 1 part per million (0.0001%), eliminating all possibility of sonic degradation.

The Earthworks 1024 Microphone Preamp is so fast, so clean and so transparent that you don’t even know it is there. It is like plugging your microphone into a “piece of wire with gain”. You will hear clarity and detail with the Earthworks 1024 preamp that is not available in any other preamp at any price.

Earthworks 1024 Microphone Preamp Features

  • Zero Distortion – less than one part per million
  • High output level +30dBu
  • Very low output impedance will drive long lines without interference or signal loss
  • True 48 volt phantom, polarity reverse & clip indicator
  • Separate XLR & 1/4” Phone (t-r-s) outputs, each with its own gain/level controls
  • 1/4” phone connector output will drive balanced or unbalanced inputs
  • Full differential (balanced) from XLR in to XLR out – no internal conversion to single-ended
  • All discrete components; Class A amplification (no ICs in the signal path)
  • Greater transparency with minimum signal path and minimum features

What We Think

The Earthworks 1024 Microphone Preamp has raised the bar for what it means for a preamp to be "a straight wire with gain." First of all, look at the frequency response: 2Hz to 100kHz ±0.1dB, 1Hz to 200kHz ±0.5dB. 'Nuff said. But where this microphone really shows itself off where the impulse response is concerned. This is an abnormally fast preamp. But the purpose of this preamp is to capture EVERYTHING sent by the microphone without adding anything else. It's pretty safe to say that David Blackmer's design has surpassed that goal, and then some. In fact, this preamp's specs are so impressive, we sell just as many of these to laboratories as we do audio industry professionals. We at Front End Audio have owned a 1022 ZDT for over 10 years for microphone evaluations since we need to hear the mic and only the mic. This is the only preamp available for meeting that purpose. One important consideration for users of Earthworks microphones is that of Phantom Power Current. It may come as a shock to some (or many) that even some of the more sexy preamps out there in the wild don't supply enough phantom power current for the rather thirsty Earthworks microphones. To drive the signal coming from those tiny (but incredibly accurate) electret elements, it takes a lot of available on-demand current (not voltage) to do properly. Obviously, the Earthworks ZDT preamps are designed with this in mind. Plus, the lightning fast transient response will accurately reproduce the undistorted transients of the source material.
