Retro 176 Limiting Amplifier

Retro 176 Limiting Amplifier brings to life the sound and feel of Bill Putnam Sr.'s 1960s original UA 176 with new features for the modern recording studio.

The Retro 176 Limiting Amplifier is based on a Bill Putnam classic, the UA 176. The Retro 176 faithfully reproduces the sound of the 1960s original with new features for the modern recording studio. The Retro 176 provides one of the most desirable compression signatures in recording history.

How does it work? Understanding the original designs...
Much like it's offspring (the 1176) the original 175 and 176 limiting amplifiers do not feature a separate Threshold control. Threshold is set with the Input control as it relates to the level of the incoming signal from it's source. As a result, it is important to balance your amount of compression and output level. The difference between the two originals lies solely in amount of compression that happens once the fixed threshold is crossed. So, the 175 had a fixed ratio of 12:1 where the 176 has switchable ratios of 2:1, 4:1, 8:1 and 12:1, again, similar to the later 1176. A multi-tapped transformer delivers the different compression ratios. Attack and Release work just like the 1176 as well in that they shorten their response times when turned clockwise. The attack time ranges from 100 to 1000 microseconds, and release ranges from 27 to 527 milliseconds. Also, the compression circuit can be switched off with a full counter-clockwise twist, again - just like with the 1176.
