I had a couple months with one of these in my studio. First off, I ended up changing the tube for a high end one. The sound went from flubby and poorly defined, to clear and well rounded. It has lots of gain and all the features one could want in a budget channel strip. With a new tube, this will take your recordings to a new level.
But... I had problems with the unit I owned. It was really, really noisy. The channel strip is designed to be low noise, but I must have had a lemon. The noise was especially prevalent when the compressor and EQ were engaged.

Great for acoustic guitar

This is a really nice little box. I use it for gigging with just an acoustic guitar. I can dial in the EQ I need (really versatile with the optional LPF, HPF, and notch filter). The compression is nice too. The preamp tube can be pushed to the point where it's noticeable, but it won't give you any real dirt; it mostly just adds a degree of warmth. I only wish there were an instrument input on the back of the unit (the line in jack bypasses the preamp, I believe).
