The Oktava MK-319 Microphone is a large diaphragm microphone ideally suited to guitars, overheads and any other application where a warm clear sound is required. The design of the mic is specifically tuned to capturing the sound in a sympathetic and flattering manner.

The Oktava MK-319 is a fixed-pattern, cardioid, large diaphragm mic intended for studio and broadcast usage. featuring a classic design gold spattered teflon capsule teamed with low noise discreet preamplifier circuitry, resulting in a smooth frequency response from 40hz to 16khz, with a gentle presence rise giving especial warmth and clarity to the human voice.

The Oktava MK-319 is the successor to the Oktava MK-219 and provides the same relentless attention to detail and legendary performance in an improved form. The Oktava MK-319 is housed in a new casing which has been acoustically designed to cut down the sound refractions inside the grill, allowing a smoother and more open sound, as well as being more rugged and shock resistant. The Switches are also improved and whilst still using magnetic reed switches the mechanism has been redesigned for extra durability and easier operation. A switch located at the left (High-Pass Filter) allows to change the microphone's cutoff frequency. This reduces low frequency interference directly at the input of the microphone amplifier. This setting also compensates for the unavoidable bass boost that occurs with all pressure gradient transducers when they are used at close distance (proximity effect). The second switch attenuates the sensitivity by 10dB. This option should be used in high SPL environments or by recording of loud instruments (for example saxophone).

    319 is extremely versatile
    Adam Lansky

The Oktava Mk-319 is one of the most versatile microphones I've ever worked with in my career as an audio engineer. The Oktava brand is often overlooked in the US market for two reasons: 1. they do not have any active marketing in the USA & 2. their appearance is absolutely utilitarian & mid-century European compared to the slick-looking mics of other companies. As it comes fresh from the factory, I admit that the capsule & headbasket require minor modifications that are easily found on YouTube. Once the mod is done (takes maybe 10 minutes), this mic has more warmth & midrange articulation than mics costing twice as much. It is great on vocals, acoustic guitars, drums, piano, strings, bass cab, & anything that you want to have a natural, pleasing tone. Anyone who doesn't like this transducer simply hasn't had enough experience -- this is an all-around workhorse mic that I would take over "classics" like the AKG 414 any dang day. Period.

It took me a lot of trial and error to figure out how to exploit these mics. I found them very useful for vocals especially backing vocals with harmonies, even when two or three singers are five feet away. Also with singers who move lots of air. Then they became my go-to for close mic-ed guitar and bass amps with lots of dirty fuzz. Used it on tenor sax and bass fiddle. I now love them but it took a while.

    smooth and somewhat versatile
    Dan

The Mk-319 is a nice sounding mic. I've used it on vocals, electric guitar and toms. It has a smooth sound, as it doesn't capture anything above 17khz, but does not come across as being dull. If you have a good mic pre, it will work well, on a few sources. Try it on drum toms as well, but use the pad. Keep in mind that it is not going to do what other, "brighter" mics will do- some of which are close to the same price(or less). I would not say that it is an all around mic at all: but one to use when a more smooth sound with more body is needed.
