The A Designs REDDI Tube Direct Box is one of the most popular direct boxes of all time. All-tube direct box with custom output transformer, the A Designs REDDI delivers outstanding detail and realism and maintains a linear response extending below the audible bass range, insuring a full, natural sound.

The A Designs REDDI Tube Direct Box is a unique unit. By "unique" we mean the effort placed into the A Design REDDI to produce a sound and character all its own. That effort took A Designs Audio back to a place in time when the Ampeg B15 reigned supreme - making liberal use of tubes and transformers. The A Designs REDDI endeavors to not only rebuild that tone, but also bring that sound to pro audio. Plug a Bass into the A Designs REDDI and it's a step back in time. Thick, round, solid sounding Bass notes that sit perfectly in the mix. The A Designs REDDI is also great for guitars, synths, and any other electronic instrument that requires a direct box for recording. In fact, some recording engineers have said that the A Design REDDI is the "best tube DI ever made."

Tube Direct Box

The A-Designs REDDI does not add tremendous amounts of gain as the point of this DI is tone, not huge increases in volume. A tube-based amplifier using the 6N1P output tube feeding an A Designs custom-wound output transformer provides the circuit path for your guitar or bass giving you a sound that you can't get through any other device.

Its all about the transformers

With any Tube gear, one of the key factor is transformers; both audio and power supply transformers. A Designs Audio custom-builds their own unique audio output transformer to produce the specific sound they're after. To keep the A Designs REDDI at its lowest noise level A Designs employs a special toroid transformer in the power supply - no wall warts or off the shelf transformer here!

Combo XLR/1/4" input connectors

Using the combination XLR and 1/4" input connectors makes the A Designs REDDI a more versatile unit. The 1/4" will handle the bass, guitar, keyboards, and MPC/Drum machines, while the XLR can be used with dynamic microphones for recording duties on snare, kick, or other instruments. The A Designs REDDI now ships with a 1/4" through-put as well.

Drop Dead Red Metal Casing

It is only fitting that a unique box like the A Designs REDDI should look unique. With a long chassis and a fire engine red finish (Red DI, get it?), the A Designs REDDI is impossible to miss even in a dark recording studio. The bright blue LED Power indicator can be seen across the stage, which makes the A Designs REDDI a very attractive package for both the engineer and musician.

    great DI
    Jorge Davalos Flores

i have a jazz bass that i was plugin directly to my apollo HI-Z input, the sound of the jazz in my recordings was really weak, lacking of punch and low bass frequencies! The reddi really brings out the low end of my bass and with a mc77 compressor it's just a killer combination.

Best bass DI of all time!!!
    Dan Slavin

I can't say enough about this amazing red box, I only had this for a short time, and I've been daydreaming about it ever since, but while I had it,I recorded some bass tracks, and let me say,it's the best sound I've ever got, especially with only one piece of gear. The sound is so smooth and amazing,it makes the bass sit perfectly in the track,I didn't even think about EQ or compression, this is truly the ultimate DI,this box gives your bass tracks a professional, great sound, which sounds like it went through five other pieces of high end gear to achieve it's results, this really gives you that sound you want, round, smooth, warm, sitting right how you want it.I can't wait until I can get another one of these, getting rid of this amazing DI is probably the dumbest thing I've ever done. Get this and enjoy easy, perfect, bass sound,A Designs nailed it on this one!

Is this a DI? Or is this a miracle!!
    Jose Luis Paramio Martinez

There's only one way to record a GREAT sounding bass guitar. I call it REDDI.

    my favorite DI
    KevinB

this bad boy rules them all. easily my favorite DI for bass...as many will agree. but it is great for much more than that. i recently needed a choir sound for a production and found the children's choir patch in the new TC Voice Live 2 was great in many respects but the fake voices were harsh and obvious...enter the REDDI to the rescue. Ran the TC box through that and the choir blended right in to the track with no EQ! no regrets over buying this thing...

    Excellent for Bass
    Jonisio

Incredible sound for my Jazz Base, fattens and add warms compared to the extremely clean input of my Apogee Duet, my only choice for bass recording! Also for Live situations!

Amazing thickness and life to your DI recordings!
    Matt Ferguson

I couldn't believe the increase in depth, thickness and presence of my guitar tone after using this unit compared to my previous DI/Preamp unit (which was a highly regarded one)! The REDDI is heralded for its excellent results on bass, but it rocks and guitar, and reportedly on synths too! HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!

    Bass and keyboards... wow!
    el igloo

This is a wonderful tone box. If I need a really intimate rhodes I won't use an amp at all, the REDDI brings out the best immediate, clean tone I've heard from my rhodes piano. Recorded bass seems almost 'premixed' ore something. Just much easier to fit within a mix. Analog synths feel deeper, fuller. Overall a more real representation of lower frequencies. Great tone!

    My favorite DI Box!
    Lyle

In my opinion, this is the be all, end of all of DI boxes. I always had a tough time getting a professional bass guitar sound until I got this. It gives such a smooth, rounded tone that fits in the mix so well. It also works great to take the edge off of sharp sounding guitar or synth tracks. I also like to run my external solid state preamps through this to give some tube warmth to the signal before it hits the conveters. I have the older version without the 1/4" pass-through....wish mine had that.

What We Think

The A Designs REDDI is a perfect way to get an fantastic recorded bass sound without having to fiddle around a ton with a bunch of audio band-aids that together may still not give you as good a sound as the REDDI. Many times a bass recorded with even a great DI will be very forward and pointy - in your face. The REDDI essentially gives you a sound that frames the bass into the mix. The sound is nice-and-round, but is set back into the mix, creating a very nice "even sounding" foundation. I found that the need for compression diminished when I used the REDDI, yet the sound was still dynamic. It may not be the cure-all for every bass player, bass, or every song, for that matter. However, it is certainly to be counted among the very best gear available to acquiring a regal and refined bass tone. The REDDI is also a great way to tame typically sterile and dry synth sounds while adding space and forward to rear dimension. The REDDI is truly a professional's tool for great recorded sound in the studio.
