Studio Projects B1 March 18, 2012
Reviewer: Ben from Medford Lakes, NJ United States
I purchased 2 of these mics for my school’s music tech class and general band recordings. They have done a great job for the about 6 years I have had them. I even used them in a pinch on some of my personal projects and they are more than serviceable. They have a nice clean sound with lots of detail and also work great for drum overheads. The newer version comes with a wooden case, fancier SP logo, and 2 pad switches, but are 40 bucks more than the older models.(We use the cardboard boxes to store the mics and the price tag is still on it.) The only minor complaint about the mic is about the shock mount. The bands seem to pop off a lot and currently one of the mic’s bands is very loose and sagging when holding the mic on an angle. They do include a few extra bands in the packaging though. I’m sure you can get more from SP as well, if needed.

Great basic tool! March 14, 2010
Reviewer: Stephen Trageser from Murfreesboro, TN United States (Bucket City, USA)
I'm very pleased with the B1's performance on acoustic instruments. I've had good results with a B1 in a dead room on acoustic guitar, fiddle, and on the lower quarter of a double bass.

In my experience, it won't beat an SM57 on a guitar cabinet for midrange thickness, but has proved serviceable in situations where a little more detail is desired. I'm not a huge fan of the supplied shockmount, but it's functional (you have to force the mic into it connector first; hasn't caused a problem, though).

On vocals, I also tried a B3, which has two of the B1 capsules in it. Its top end was somewhat brittle and did not flatter that particular singer.
