The Slate Digital Virtual Console Collection V2 Plug-In Bundle brings the sound of 5 of the world's top analog consoles (including the new RC-Tube model) into your DAW workstation. "Slate Digital CTO Fabrice Gabriel and I studied these consoles inside and out. We meticulously modeled the entire circuit path so that we could recreate every subtle nuance that makes these consoles the legends that they are", says Slate.
The Virtual Console Collection V2 consists of two plugins, Virtual Channel and Virtual Mixbuss. Each plugin allows the user to choose from one of six modeled consoles. Virtual Channel is applied on individual mixing channels. Virtual Mixbuss goes on the first insert of the master fader. "When using the Virtual Console Collection, your DAW instantly takes on the personality of a real analog mixing desk. The imaging and depth improves, instruments sit better in the frequency spectrum, and mixing becomes easier and more musical. You can even push the DAW faders up to find each mixer's "sweet spot", says Slate.
Despite the digital revolution in the audio industry, many of today's top commercial albums are still mixed on analog consoles. Audio engineers rely on analog mixing to provide the nonlinear musical qualities that digital mixing does not produce. "When you mix through an analog desk you get this life and body to the sound that just doesn't happen when you mix inside the workstation. The separation and imaging from the analog summing is very apparent, especially when your track count gets high" remarks mixer Jay Baumgardner (Papa Roach, Evanescence).
Over the past ten years, multiple audio manufacturers have produced simplified analog summing boxes that allow DAW users to get the benefits of analog mixing without having to use a full fledged analog desk. In 2001, Steven Slate made his mark in the analog summing world by commissioning Roll Music Systems to design and manufacture a custom analog summing box that was later named the FOLCROM. The FOLCROM continues to be one of the most popular analog summing boxes on the market, used by mixer Mike Shipley and other top names. The second plug-in in the Virtual Analog Series, the Slate Digital Virtual Tape Machines Plug-In authentically captures the sound of two classic tape decks including a 2 inch 16 track deck from NRG RECORDING, as well as the 1/2" 2 track mastering deck used by mastering engineer Howie Weinberg. I was keen to try this out and FEA had a great deal (including an iLok2, which I wanted anyway!).
The VCC is slightly LESS than I expected, imbuing a very subtle effect on the audio. Admittedly, I run my mix through an analog console, so can just hear a slight "fullness" being added (in my case, the Drive knob needs to be up a bit, though). Nice.
I suggest the prospective buyer tries the demo version from Slate Digital's website to see if it "floats-your-boat" (unfortunately, iLok2 is required for it to work!!).
I've been playing with these plugs for the last few weeks now, and I'm split. At first listen they don't make a huge difference, even if you drive them and calibrate them to be hitting hard. I'm monitoring on adams, and a dynaudio sub, so if it's there I should be able to hear it. There is definitely SOME tone shaping.. I notice it on the Neve emulation the most in the low end. Over time though, I think they do impart a subtle depth and sheen (for lack of better descriptors). The pros are... sometimes you only need a subtle difference and the plugs seem to be pretty cpu efficient. The con is.... you are spending some cash for something that you may or may not notice immediately.
Bottom line.. If you are still in a growing stage, invest your money in basics. If you have peaked a lot of your capabilities, this may be the subtle push over the edge.
I'm impressed with these plugs. They do what I expected, ie. not much (and I mean that in a good way)! You can just leave them alone and they will subtly do their thing. The auto muting of hiss is a good idea too. It's good to have the 4 different consoles in there - the Neve sounds huge in the bottom end, very nice but I found it too big to add to a finished mix (would probably be fine if mixing through it right from the start though, as you would mix accordingly). The Trident has a very nice sheen to it also, I may even prefer this to the SSL(!) I haven't found the API to be so useful yet but no doubt it has its place. I look forward to the forthcoming additional emulations in an update.
The downsides: still some bugs to iron out, but no showstoppers on my system, and there is a long pause before the interface appears when adding a new instance. 8x oversampling makes renders SLOW but that is perfectly understandable, and you don't have to use any oversampling if you don't want to.
I haven't used this plugin enough times in different projects to get a clear handle on how it affects different mixes, but it does definitely help give your mix that analog vibe. I actually love the fact that it's simple to use--just two knobs...can't get much simpler than that! There are different camps out there who differ on how "real" the "analog desk" sound is on this unit, but rest assured it does have its own sound and uniqueness!

Recently bought VCC/VTM bundle, VCC working excellent, it adds some character & low end, very similar to analog consoles, i wish they will upgrade it with stereo width knob, cause to me it's part of the sound of Neve & SSL consoles.
(you should try oversampling on vcc.)
VTM sounds better than any other software tape simulator to me.
