Earthworks SR40V High Definition Vocal Microphone Details
The Earthworks SR40V High Definition Vocal Microphone is THE stage microphone of choice when you want a pure and clear audio lens onto the voice you put in front of it! Featuring revolutionary circuitry for exemplary sonic performance and build quality that is the envy of the industry, the new SR40V gives new definition to the assumptions and expectations associated with vocal microphones.
Featuring a 9 mm back electret condenser-type transducer with a diaphragm measuring 5 microns, the new Earthworks SR40V is an engineering marvel that provides the fastest transient response of any vocal microphone on the market. Combined with a textbook perfect Hyper Cardioid polar pattern, this exceptional new microphone delivers superior sounding, natural on- and off-axis performance compared to any microphone previously available. With a frequency range spanning from 30 Hz to 40 kHz, the SR40V is the world's first High Definition condenser vocal microphone. The end result is a natural clarity of sound with greater presence and depth than is customarily associated with vocal microphones.
Earthworks prides itself on delivering sound quality as close as physically possible to the original live source. Capturing this True Live Sound (TLS) is precisely what differentiates an Earthworks microphone from the competition. The SR40V's patented technology provides extreme accuracy in the time domain, which is essential for harmonics to be reproduced faithfully and not be smeared or distorted. The new SR40V achieves the re-creation of the True Live Sound with its revolutionary circuitry by combining flat, extended frequency response with lightning fast impulse response. This circuitry is handcrafted to match each capsule for optimum performance and is precisely what makes the SR40V - and all Earthworks High Definition microphones - so unique.
With a self-noise rating of just 22 dB SPL (A weighted), a sensitivity rating of 10 mV/Pa (-40 dBV/Pa), and a Peak Acoustic Output rating of 145 dB SPL, the new SR40V combines extremely low handling noise with robust performance and output capability that enables vocal performers to have the natural sounding, up-front presence they've always wanted.
The SR40V's build quality is every bit as impressive as its performance attributes. Each microphone is handmade in the USA and features a rugged stainless steel body that feels great in the hand - thanks in no small part to its unique blend of balance and precision machining. From end to end, the SR40V delivers industry leading reliability that is second to none.
Bill Norton, Earthworks' COO, commented on the company's new SR40V High Definition Vocal Microphone. "We are extremely proud of this new mic," states Norton. "Earthworks' dedication to producing what we call True Live Sound has long been a hallmark that defines our entire product line. For quite some time now, music and audio professionals have asked us for a vocal microphone with these characteristics and the SR40V is the result of that endeavor. Everything about this microphone - from its accuracy of sound and the way it feels in the hand to its refined build quality - unite to form a world-class experience that better enables vocalists to showcase their talents in an entirely new light."

What We Think
"The Earthworks SR40V High Definition Handheld Vocal Microphone will completely change all your perceptions about what a stage vocal microphone is and can be. To the Front Of House or Monitor Engineer, the first clue as to how drastically it differs from all other stage microphones, will probably be when soloing through all of the mics on the stage, listening for "air" to confirm that the mics are working. The air that you hear with most other microphones sounds congested and quite heavy. The SR40V by contrast sounds like there is literally NOTHING in between you and that spot on stage. This is a massive clue as to what you are about to witness. PLUS - it's a clue as to what you are NOT going to have muddying up your mix when you factor that across 3 or 4 vocal microphones. This is extremely attractive from a mixer's standpoint, as well as being attractive to both monitor engineer and performer in that the lack of a defined resonance makes for lower chance of lower-mid ring or feedback.
Like with all great studio microphones, the way that the SR40V captures and presents the voice is in a fashion that isn't wildly dynamic or requiring lots of compression in order to sound musical or comfortable to the vocalist - though a little bit of good compression used tastefully/sparingly never hurts to have in place. It has massive amounts of output. So, you may wish to have an Earthworks LevelPad on hand just in case you need to cleanly PAD down the signal by 15dB - 30dB.
The SR40V is visually striking with it's stylish phase -ports beneath the head-mesh and label-ring. This porting provides the SR40V with some of the best front-to-rear rejection and uncolored off-axis response we've ever heard in any microphone. And the top end is really smooth while being appropriately detailed.
This is not an inexpensive microphone - that's no secret. But for any performer or tour who truly cares about the quality of sound being presented, the Earthworks SR40V is a microphone nearly without peer. It has to be used to be believed - and hearing is believing, for sure!"
