Cascade Vin-Jet Ribbon Microphone
The Cascade Vin-Jet Ribbon Microphone is designed to produce the most intimate, warm, and articulate sound. An excellent choice for recording guitar cabinets, drum overheads and vocals, the Vin-Jet is an exceptional value that competes with ribbon microphones that cost many times over.
The Cascade Vin-Jet Ribbon Microphone features a 2 7/16 long ribbon of aluminum suspended in the field of a pair of Neodymium rare earth permanent magnets. When the ribbon is exposed to sound it vibrates within the magnetic field and a tiny current is induced in the ribbon.
This current is amplified to produce sound. What makes ribbon microphones so incredibly sensitive and accurate is that the signal comes directly from the material that senses the sound; nothing is lost in translation. The result is the most intimate, warm, and articulate sound produced by the Cascade Vin-Jet Ribbon Microphone. Ribbon microphones are an excellent choice for recording guitar cabinets, drum overheads and vocals.
Neodymium rare earth permanent magnet is a new kind of magnetic material developed in the 1980s with excellent magnetic characteristics in terms of a high-energy product, high coercive force etc. It is the strongest and most powerful magnetic material up to now and regarded as "The King of Magnets".

No question, there is something totally seductive about a ribbon microphone, and I really like this one. The Cascade Vin-Jet does not really replace an AEA R84 I owned for years, but offers much of the magic for a margin of the cost. In some ways, it works better for me, because I like to experiment with voice-over work. The R84 is really a medium distance mic because of proximity effect and it was troublesome close up. The Cascade is really good at 7-10 inches where I like to work and the very fact it is not as creamy as the R84 allows vocals a bit more presence, much like a condenser, but more resonant. Made in China, but upgraded in the USA with Evidence wire, QC on the ribbon tension, modified grillwork and an optional Lundahl transformer, it is less of a crapshoot and more of an alternative to a really high-end ribbon mic than other imports. I added a Crimson MoGaine pre-preamp which is a total necessity for the modest Focusrite USB interface feeding my computer.
