The Stager SR-2N Ribbon Microphone provides a full warm sound, with buttery smooth details, and a soft airy top end. The deep low end, and forward mids, bring a character that holds weight in a mix. The Stager SR-2N Ribbon Microphone's shock mount allows for easy positioning of the mic to the sound source, ensuring you get the image you want, without concerns for stability.

The Stager SR-2N Ribbon Microphone is hand-built in Music City, USA and crams an inordinate amount of size into the sound of your tracks. Just leave the thing on a stand and point it at anything that makes sound, then stretch out a big ol' smile when you listen to playback.

No, big things don't come in small packages. Small things comes in small packages as a matter of simple physics. But that doesn't mean that something small can't consistently kick the pants off of something bigger. Lovingly made by hand in Music City, USA, the Stager SR-2N ribbon microphone embodies exactly this. All of this. It's no wonder that a great ribbon mic can lure the listener deep into whatever sound it's picking up. The damn things work because of magnets -- materials that are literally designed to physically pull and attract other materials and get them to stick.

While weighing in at under one pound, the Stager SR-2N crams an inordinate amount of size into the sound of your tracks. Employing the same ribbon and toroidal output transformer as the company's flagship model Stager SR-1A, the Stager SR-2N swaps out the large alnico magnets with a more contemporary neodymium motor, while simplifying the housing and mount to put heavyweight punch into a featherweight fighter.

Incredible low-frequency pickup and a neutral midrange set the stage for a very gentle high-frequency rolloff that's inherent to classic ribbons -- but the Stager SR-2N ribbon microphone miraculously loses no transient detail, and beautifully flatters percussive material and bright sound sources in a way that won't make you feel like you're missing anything by skipping the EQ.

Stick one up close on the smaller speaker of an old tube combo for tremendous low-end emphasis, back up a pair to capture drums with a three-dimensional quality, or...jeez...just leave the thing on a stand and point it at anything that makes sound, then stretch out a big ol' smile when you listen to playback.

A killer ribbon for the price

I have an earlier version of the SR-2N, but the sound should be identical. I have a pair of them and love them as drum overheads, room mics, and on electric guitar. They're smooth without being overly dark, take SPL well, and add a nice heft (without being muddy) to the signal.

What We Think

The Stager SR-2N Ribbon Microphone definitely has weight. There is a nice bloom in the mid range, and solid depth in the low mids and lows. The top has a nice air about it, with a smooth buttery "dark" upper mids and highs. You get a nice sense of a "larger than life" image from the mic (which is surprising given the size of the mic) - but it is not overwhelming. It's quite natural. With the slightly darker top end, I find this mic great for stringed instruments (like mandolin or violin), brass and woodwind, drums, and guitar cab.
